Tape Time

Here are a few more observations from the tape….

  1. Herbert Taylor, the Chiefs’ new starting left tackle, looks like he might be very good.  He reminds me of Derrick Deese, the former 49er and Buc.  He’s a bit short for the left tackle spot, but very athletic and knows how to play.
  2. For Buffalo to improve on defense, they will need Ko Simpson to improve his tackling.  He takes too many wrong angles and has too many misses.  Big runs in the secondary happen when the safeties miss tackles.
  3. I heard he was unblockable from people who watch tape, but Shawn Rogers is a load.  He was very effective in the middle of the defense and will make the Browns run defense much better.
  4. Linebacker Anthony Waters, the third-round pick of the Chargers a year ago, is the real deal.  I knew he was good coming out, but he had a knee problem.  With a year off he looks like he is going to help the Chargers.
  5. I mentioned this last time, but do people realize that Brandon Marshall is bigger then Jarvis Moss?  Moss looks like he weighs about 230 pounds.  He needs to get stronger — FAST.
  6. Akeem Jordan of the Eagles seems to be around the ball all the time.  He was the Atlantic Ten player of the year in 2006 and a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award.  He was very impressive last summer and looks like he adds speed and athletic talent to the Eagles linebackers.
  7. Tight End Jon Carlson, the Seahawks’ second-round pick out of Notre Dame, is very good.  He will add a huge dimension to their offense.  Mike Holmgren always knows how to make tight ends produce.

Carlson looked like he had some nice soft hands against the Vikings last week. How has his blocking looked?

In that offense, Aaron the tight end is not a big point of attack blocker and they throw the ball to run it, so that is an added plus.

Shawn Rogers blew up Alan Faneca on a failed fourth-down sneak last week. He can be as good as he wants to be.

That is one of the plays I was thinking of when I wrote that

Don, you are exactly right about Rogers. He is as good as he wants to be. There are times during his Lions career when he was the best player on the field. Unfortunately, his lack of motivation off the field affects his play on it.

I don’t expect this level of play to last very long in Cleveland. By November he will be dogging it.

Are they using Rodgers as a true Nose out of a 3-4 in Cleveland? Or are they going with more of a 4-3? Regardless, it makes for a nice line with Williams, Robaire Smith (a steal), and then big Shaun Smith rotating in. Definitely will help cover up some potential secondary issues.

He can play a 3-4 end and reduce under it to where he’s a 4 or 3 tech and watch out.
Was he injured last year or just looking to leave and forcing the issue?

This site is great. It is a must visit everyday. Will you featuring any chats at all? Keep up the great work. Michael, did you see the article in the current PFW about the Ravens staff from the first season in Baltimore? Good stuff as well.

What do you think the Chiefs will do when Brandon Albert is healed? H Taylor seems a little undersized to be a right side power blocking tackle, is right guard in his future?
