Random Thoughts from Last Night’s Games…

…Thank God the Jets went and got Brett Favre.  Did you see Kellen Clemens last night?  Batted balls, poor execution, clearly not a starting quarterback in the NFL.

…Loved how Favre looked and played.  Imagine if he was still on the Packers?  They would be a top four team…no doubt.

…Opposing teams will spread the Jets out on first and second down and make their big outside backers have to play in space.  They still lack some speed and rush ability on defense.

Dolphins QB Chad Henne is going to make the Jets regret not drafting him in two years.  He played well again last night.

Charlie Frye of Seattle might have to worry about making the team.  After last night, Mike Holmgren would never put him in a game.

…The long run of Ray Rice was the work of quarterback Troy Smith, great audible and great call.  That changing of the play had to make the coaches feel much better.

…I watched the Vikings-Baltimore game and Tarvaris Jackson looked very good.  I think he is going to be one of those guys you throw out percentage of completion and look at his big plays.  His eye level was very good last night.

…Wide receiver Josh Morgan of the 49ers looks like the real deal.

…The Cowboys have to be nervous about their secondary after Jay Cutler torched them last night.  They should be very worried—without a pass rush, the Cowboys get exposed.  Pacman is not a shut down corner…please accept this.

…The Broncos can throw the ball with Cutler.  He is really a great player and is the best QB of that draft.  Not sure yet who will be the Denver ball carrier.

…I have always liked Miles Austin of the Cowboys and last night he looked great.  I think with his return skills and run after the catch ability, he should be a very good player.  And it is not because he is from New Jersey.  I have blinders on for Jersey, but I temper them at times.

…Texans running back Steve Slaton just went up in all your fantasy draft guides.  We have been promoting him here for some time.

…Running back Chris Johnson of the Titans is the real deal.  Don’t worry about the drops, just draft him.

Felix Jones is really going to be a home-run hitter.  He has great power and great speed.

…Don’t read too much into the Packers huge loss to the 49ers.  They had a short week and a long trip. That is a bad combination in the preseason.

…Running back Jacob Hester of the Chargers impresses me each time he carries the ball.

…Outside linebacker Vernon Gholston of the Jets was painful to watch last night.   He was not very physical and seems to have no clue of whether the opposing team is calling a run or pass.   Even the Jets TV announcers said he was disappointing.

    Mike,

Nice call on Favre to Jets trade. IIRC, you were only writed who was saying from the beginning that Jets Mgt should fly to Kiln and try to sell the idea to Brett.

Thanks for remembering. And I could not imagine what life would be like for the Jets had Favre not come back.

    mike-
i watched the SEA and CHI game last night… matt forte seemed okay, but not great (from a FF perspective, he bangs it in there but nothing special to him after– sort of laurence maroney-esque)…

meanwhile, josh forseth looked pretty damned good for SEA… he explodes through tackles, which is the quality i think makes backs succeed in the NFL (tomlinson, payton, sanders, petersen)…

he’s not gonna see any real playing time this year obviously (barring jones and morris getting hurt), but he’s fun to watch, and has a little switch he clicks on– his size and tenacity reminds me of Slaton in HOU (whom i honestly believe will be seeing some real time by mid season this year, and whom i’m targeting with a late round sleeper pick)

    Mike,
Will the Jets defense improve enough, though, that the Favre acquisition pays off? Is it worth it if they go 9-7 this year and don’t make the playoffs?

Also, will you be putting your archives up here at any point? All visits to your old site automatically re-direct to the main NFP page, and it’d be nice to be able to point people to posts like your Packer scouting report.

Favre did look good and even though it is just preseason, the Jets OLine looked improved and deserve some credit. I think the Steelers will regret transition tagging a backup RT and letting Alan Faneca go.

Put Gholston at end where he plays best.

I wasn’t a big fan of his, the reason they got him at LB is that he can’t shed blocks and they hope he makes up for it playing in space.

That said, put him where he has some chance to make an impact.

As for Faneca’s departure, the Steelers thought it would be easy since he’s not superbly athletic. They thought for that reason he would not be the kind of impact player that a Hutchinson became with his new team.

Big mistake, he’s someone you throw measurables out the window with. Like John Runyan, there’s always a place for a mauler on a front line.

Thanks Mike, as a disgruntled Packer Fan your comments about Brett just add salt to the wounds. No love for Ted Thompson here.

Jets defense will only improve if they get a pass rush. And this site will be filled with scouting reports…
