QUOTE OF THE DAY…Difficulties strengthen the mind, as well as labor does the body.”  — Seneca

Scattered observations on this Labor Day morning….

1.     The Giants kept six running backs, six wide receivers, and three tight ends.  They could do this because they only kept two quarterbacks.  If the Giants reach the point where they have to play David Carr, they are in deep trouble.

2.     What are the Jets doing with four QBs?  Amazing.  They kept seven wide receivers and four quarterbacks.  I detest that combination.  Ahmad Carroll, the Packers’ former number one pick, made the team.  Let’s see if they play him in a game.  I think he is a liability at corner.

3.      The Skins officially named Stephen Heyer the starter at right tackle.  Why even keep Jansen on the team now?  You guarantee him the whole year on Saturday at 4pm (ET).

4.     Miami has eight starters over the age of thirty.  They need to keep trying to get younger and to improve the talent base.  Having a legitimate young quarterback is a great first step.  Kendall Langford is a really good looking young defensive lineman.

5.      New England is another team that kept seven wide receivers.  It would not surprise me if they were working one of them over at corner.

6.     The Raiders have spent over $18 million this year alone on wide receivers, but still do not have a legitimate wide receiver.  It is going to be painful to watch the Raider passing game.  They kept 11 offensive linemen, but better hope they don’t have to play Marlo Henderson.  I love to see the Hotel Scholarship Program in full force.

7.     The Rams need to add another defensive tackle.  Losing Claude Wroten made them very thin inside.

8.     The Bucs must have been worried they would like fifth-round quarterback Josh Johnson as they chose to keep four QBs.

9.     Denver kept 10 defensive linemen, but I am not sure they even have three.  Based on the preseason tape I saw, Alvin McKinley and Ebenezer Ekuban won’t help this team at all late in the season.  Both looked very stiff-legged.

10.   The 49ers got Tully Banta Cain to take a pay cut, thus allowing him to make the team.

Mike: Any thoughts on the Houston running game now? With Ahman Green restructuring and staying- do you think Slaton still might lead the team in rushing? Thanks.

    Mike,

Can you believe Sam Williams made the cut again? Wait…I guess you can. His scholarship is post graduate by now. What is the over/under on JL Higgins first turnover that loses a game?

I think Slaton is their best chance of leading the team to wins. He has to play. green gets hurt the more he plays

Look it, maybe by designation the Pats have 7 receivers but in actuality they only have 3. Aiken and Washington are on the team for special teams. And Ventrone and CJ Jones for their versatility. None of them can fill in for the top 3. I wouldn’t be surprised if they tried to pick up another legit receiver.

    Hey Mike:

I think the Jets also plan on using one of their WRs as a CB. Apparently Chansai Stuckley got some reps at corner in the final preseason game, and didn’t look half bad doing it. (How badly do the Jets want to be the Patriots??)

your right. Bob D. they might count as wide receivers, but they are not really going to play wide out.

Giants should sign Quinn Gray. They probably hope to trade one of the young value RB.

As for NE needs, I’d look Deltha O’Neil’s way first, they need some kind of CB depth. Then look to Reche Caldwell and Samie Parker.

LaMont Jordan is hella cheap in cap leagues and Kevin Faulk will miss one game for certain….

Sam Williams is the all time owner of the Derrick Gibson “Raiders player who has no business being on the field” award.

Sam Williams is even surprised he made the team…but who can argue with the Hotels scholarship program.

I hope Deltha does well there. Bill B will not ask a player to go past his limitations, without finding some way of helping him in the scheme.

I also like that Bill B was scouring the Jets roster for players. The players should transition fast moving nearby, and he gets inside dibs on their new audibles and schemes.

Their new corner will get more chances for interceptions with teams playing catchup to his new team’s offense. Deltha should feel less a need to gamble in that category, so he should alleviate the concerns of getting toasted, especially with the help they can put around him.

Now he’s somewhere he can really play his game the way that his personal traits meet the challenge. Good luck.

Once the Faulk situation is resovled after the first game the Pats may also find some way to shuffle around things to add even more depth for defense, or add a return man/wideout.

The experience factor says they need a wideout, but to really be where they expect to play in Jan. and Feb. the team needs more quality defensive depth also.

That last roster spot could be critical when you are a team that plans on being a more perfect union, this year out.

Going for 19 wins. Many of us expect that to be a moot point within the first month, but they still are looking to secure home field, one game at a time.

I’d be very surprised if Matthew Slater (officially safety, but he’s been playing some wideout and he made his reputation on special teams as a gunner/returner at UCLA) wasn’t the Pats’ primary kick returner. Ellis Hobbs is probably too valuable at corner to be returning kicks.

Punt returner: Welker or Kevin Faulk, I guess.

Davdid Carr looked pretty good this preseason. Whether he lived up to expectations or not he IS a former #1 overall so he does have some skills that are coveted in this league.

I think the problem some guys like him face is that they become close minded, stop learning and working on weaknesses when they think they’ve “made it”. I still think Carr can start again some day, a QB may need to go down beforehand…

Sonny, I used to have the same faith in former #1s until I saw Tim Couch play for my Packers one preseason. Saying it was pathetic is being nice. The Giants arent going anywhere without Eli, they should instead try a rookie or 2nd year guy at QB and build him instead of a reclaimation project.

Also, does anyone have any insight on why Ted Thompson cut Jon Ryan for Derrick Frost? In my eyes, this is a lateral move, at best. And honestly rather frustrating as Ryan was fine and we make a move at punter whilst only carrying 3 DTs on roster. I talked to a Redskins fan and when he described Frost it sounded like he was describing Ryan with a slightly weaker leg. I dont get it.
