TUESDAY TAVERN TALK….
First some follow up to our Al Davis Raider story from this morning. Commissioner Roger Goodell sent out a memo on 5 June 2008 called “Integrity of the Game and Fair Competition” to all 32 club owners and executives clearly stating his policy and guidelines.
Here is the part that the Raiders failed to take into account when they threw the Patriots, Randy Moss, or anyone else under the bus last Tuesday at their press conference:
This is directly quoted from the memo.
“Second, in assessing discipline for competitive violations, I will take into account the nature and materiality of the violation, the prior record of the party committing the violation, the discipline imposed in comparable cases, the extent of the party’s cooperation in the investigation and all other relevant facts and circumstances. Insofar as possible, I will take into account the actual competitive effects of the violation.”
“Third, we have made clear that those who report a competitive violation must have a reasonable basis for doing so, and are expected to come forward with evidence to substantiate the charge. If I determine that a charge was made in bad faith, is frivolous, or that the club or person making the charge is unable or unwilling to provide evidence to support it, I will impose appropriate sanctions.”
“Fourth, we will make all reasonable efforts to preserve confidentiality and protect those who report the competitive violation. Any actual or threatened retaliation against a person who makes a report in good faith will be grounds for discipline.
So, if the Raiders had a case against the Patriots, there is ample wording and protection to go ahead and make their claim. Why wait 18 months later to make this charge? Might it be that Moss scored 23 touchdowns last year for the Pats?
Now some football….
Here is a list of Practice Squad Players that clubs currently are paying more than the minimum salary which indicates they do not want to lose the player:

This proves that Al Davis is living in the past when he was able to spew out frivolous claims at anyone he so desired. Todays NFL does not take kindly to this sort of behavior. Al clearly has no regard for the partnership and responsibility he has to the other 31 teams in the NFL.
Goodells phone should be ringing off the hook from the other owners
(and Lane Kiffin) telling him to nail Al to the wall on this one.

So, why are the Saints paying more than the minimum for 11 practice squad players, while every other team is only doing it for a few? Do they have that many coveted practice squad players?

Mike,
What is your view on this policy? If they are good enough to be paid more as a practice squad player, why aren’t they good enough to make the team? Are the teams paying above and beyond for these players really that deep in the 53 man roster?

with the new cap increase it makes sense to give them a little more, but you have to do it for everyone…

I thought a team could only have 8 players on the PS….? How does NO have 11.
Something else I read that relates to this article (wikipedia):
In 2006, the New England Patriots paid third-year player Billy Yates the full $425,000 he would have earned on the active roster.

Could Ten be in talks with Det for Roy Williams? Any truth to the rumors they are shopping him?

Mike -
You were canned by Al Davis. Get over it and stop with the repeated weak attacks. Many people better than you suffered the same fate. Mayber you learned from Shanahan? After all, he claimed all along that David owed him money, but he never received it. Why do you think Shanahan never took the case to court? Maybe b/c he was wrong?

Andy - why hasn’t Kiff done anything? Maybe because Al was correct that Kiff lied about many things, including when he said he hadn’t spoken to Al since prior to the season opener. Kiff sounds like Clemons. Where is Roger’s suit against his personal trainer? None, because there is no suit. Kiff can spout all the bluster, but he is the liar. He tried to take repeated attacks at Al in the press because he knew didn’t speak frequently in public. So Al sets the record straight, and Kiff has no specifics, only vague responses. Kiff is conning the media and you, just like he conned Al.

Mike - who recommended the Raiders trade Randy for a 4th round pick?
What happened to the Turd anyway? Did he win a SB ring?

Mike- do the trading rules apply to these players? ( as it relates to active players).
