Each Friday here at The National Football Post I will bring you a different perspective on the week’s top stories as we head into the last day of the work week. Here are some things to talk about as you stare at the clock this Friday. So, let’s get to it. Here are my top eight headlines of week 11 in the NFL….
WEEK 11
EIGHT: $125 Million Dollar Busts- DeAngelo Hall ($70 Mil) was given an apple, a road map, and a bus ticket this week—that obviously ended up at the DC Transit Station—and Javon Walker ($55 Mil) shut it down for the season with ankle surgery. Al Davis must think he is playing Monopoly. Someone needs to tell him that is real money he is handing out to these two big time busts.
SEVEN: Jerry, Jerry, Jerry- We can’t go a week without Jerry Jones and the ‘Boys. Jones said the Cowboys would “absolutely” make the playoffs. I don’t like when owners make “guarantees,” because it is easy to run your mouth when you are in the Owner’s Box, drinking $500 dollar bottles of wine, eating some kind of exotic meal, and bumping up concessions for the fans who re-financed their homes to pay for season tickets, while the players and coaches are on the field—working.
SIX: Quitters?- Lots of drama coming out of Cleveland this week after Josh Cribbs said some of the Browns “quit” last week in a loss to the Broncos. Head Coach Romeo Crennel said it didn’t happen, as did GM Phil Savage (who is in the news way too much for a team that doesn’t win). Quit, didn’t quit. You know what; the Browns are 3-6. Do you really think it matters? I don’t. It is time to watch LeBron and the Cavs in Cleveland.
FIVE: Upset Urlacher- Rumors out of Chicago say that Bears’ LB Brian Urlacher is “unhappy” with his defense—particularly the Tampa 2 scheme that was sliced apart by Kerry Collins last Sunday. Unhappy? This is the same defense that took the Bears to the Super Bowl two years ago—maybe Urlacher should make a play for the first time since that season before he starts pointing fingers.
FOUR: Winless Lions- If you thought things were bad in Detroit, just listen to former Lions WR (and new Cowboys star) Roy Williams, who told The Detroit News, “They are staring 0-16 in the face right now.” Folks, if you are looking for something new to laugh about when talking Lions football at happy hour tonight, this might be it. I know you are just excited as I am to have to watch this crap with your family on Thanksgiving.
THREE: Bye, Bye Rex- Unfortunately (for Packer fans) it looks like Bears’ QB Rex Grossman might go back to the visor and the clipboard. Reports out of Chicago say that Kyle Orton (ankle injury) might play this Sunday at Lambeau. I honestly wanted to see Rex play well—and hopefully get out of this city with a fresh start, and hopefully, a job next season. But, I also wanted to play for the Cubs when I was in second grade. We don’t always get what we want.
TWO: Woe is Me- Reports out of The Tennessean state that Vince Young seems “detached” from the rest of the team on the sideline during games. This shouldn’t be shocking news coming from the guy who took himself out of a game because the fans weren’t being nice to him. Hey Vince, Kerry Collins just threw for almost 300-yards in a win last week, so you better get used to standing in that spot with your head down—you are going to be there for a while. There used to be a day when players liked being on a “team.”
ONE: J-E-T-S! - How about Brett Favre and his guys last night? Say all you want about Mr. Favre and his “gun-slinging” mentality. What I saw in overtime—on the road—was anything but that. Favre was on target, drove his team down the field to beat the Patriots, and, I almost forgot, he didn’t throw a pick all night. Anyone else notice that the Jets are 7-3, in first place, probably going to the playoffs, and the Packers, well…

A couple of thoughts:
I hear you on Urlacher. Briggs is the LEADER of our defense.
I wanted to see Rex play well also, but it won’t happen in this city. He needs to get a fresh start, and I think he can be an effective player in a new uniform.
Love #1… Pack fans were crying last night after another Favre win.
Jerry Jones is bad for the NFL.

12:03 pm
At least the Lions are playing the Titans on Turkey Day, so we can see the difference between an 0-11 team and a 11-0 team.
November 14, 2008
12:05 pm
I know that Favre played a “decent” game against my Pats last night, but what about my boy Matt Cassel: 400 yards in the air, and 62 on the gorund. Dude is going to make bank as a free agent this off-season.
Jerry Jones is a loser, and so are the Cowboys.
November 14, 2008
12:09 pm
“Crap?” “Crap?” That is harsh Matt. True, but still harsh. And by the way Roy, how many times have you actually been able to signal for a First Down in Big D? Have fun being a meaningless player for the ‘Boys.
November 14, 2008
12:15 pm
Keep it coming with the Cowboys Matt and company.
Jealousy is a bad trait.
November 14, 2008
12:19 pm
Wow, pretty harsh today, Matt.
I didn’t see the Jets game, but I listened to it on the radio (no NFL Network) when they got the ball in OT, I knew they were going to win, Brett was having one of those days.
The Pack will be fine……..
I Hope

Not quite Romo–When is the last time the Cowboys won a playoff game? With Aikman?
That franchise is a joke–almost as bad as the Evil Empire in the Bronx.
November 14, 2008
12:20 pm
Paul- Just trying to drive some discussion today. It’s Friday.
November 14, 2008
12:25 pm
Nation-You’re window has passed in NE. Time to move over and get rid of the 40-year olds you guys have playing on defense.
We will win in the playoffs this year. Come see us in Tampa if you can.
November 14, 2008
12:29 pm
Sox - Is Cassel just a product of the system?
November 14, 2008
12:45 pm
Da Coach- Packer fan here. I was watching the game drinkings some brews and cheering #4 on. The only ones crying are Ted Thompson boot lickers.
November 14, 2008
12:49 pm
Jackie–I was doing the same thing; and EVERYONE was cheering for #4.

12:55 pm
I think Packer fans, since seeing Favre act like a jerk in NY, are okay with Favre being in NY and Rodgers being their quarterback. Most of them recognize that the problem this year doesn’t lie with Rodgers, but with Grant being a one-year wonder. It’s tough to win without a running game.
November 14, 2008
12:58 pm
Matt, On the topic of Jerry and the Facemakers Jones, although the New York fans are whining about personal seat licenses in the $20,000 neighborhood for the new Giants-Jets stadium, I’ve heard that JJ (a/k/a “false face”) wants $150,000 per seat for a location not even at mid-field. And, apparently, the seat license in Big D expires after 30 years and can’t be sold, unlike New York’s no expiration date and transferrable license. Can you or any Cowboy season ticket holder reading this confirm or dispute? If its true, it’s beyond disgusting–and unimaginably overpriced.
November 14, 2008
1:01 pm
Paul- The only issue I have with “System QB” talk, is that the last throw Cassel made to Moss had nothing to do with the system–it was big time, and the system doesn’t seem to be working to well in South Bend with Charlie right now.
I think Cassel is a player.
November 14, 2008
1:04 pm
Doug- I just don’t see where you are coming from with “Favre acting like a jerk in NY”
November 14, 2008
1:08 pm
Like I said ealier, I didn’t see the game, but Cassel has looked pretty good the couple of times I’ve seen him play and you’re right the system isn’t working in South Bend - maybe he just needs some more system players….
November 14, 2008
1:10 pm
By the way, Dennis Green said the throw to Moss looked big time.
November 14, 2008
1:14 pm
I hear you on Notre Dame Paul…
Cassel should make some coin in the off-season
November 14, 2008
1:16 pm
Matt- I think I can translate what Doug was saying. Pretty much he’s saying he’s either a Bears, Lions, Vikings, 49ers, or Patriot fan or hes a Packer fan with who likes to swap spit with good ol Teddy boy.
November 14, 2008
1:34 pm
Jackie - if you want to talk like that about other posters go to either PFT or any of the Packer Chat sites where you can’t get through any topic on the Pack without everyone talking about sheep, TT-this or Brett-that. We don’t need NFP degenerating into that BS.
RATIONAL football conversations, please.
November 14, 2008
1:42 pm
Life long Packer fan here. Could care less what Brett does in NY other than the better they do the better draft pick we get.
ARodg will be fine in GB, he is having his ups and downs as to be expected from a first year starter with no offensive line and an injured throwing shoulder.
Long term switching to Rodgers was a good move for the team, short term probably a wash as I don’t think they would be much if any better with Brett this year.
Cassel is starting to come along pretty good. Tough situation to be thrown into that spotlight suddenly and have no running game to help you out.
It will be interesting to see him next year when he is the QB in somewhere like Minny, Detroit, SF, etc..
November 14, 2008
1:49 pm
Paul- Well put my friend…
November 14, 2008
1:49 pm
The best thing Cassel could do is either (a) get franchised by the Pats; or (b) sign a one or two year extension for high back-up money (what is that? 2-3 mill a year). That way, he is in a position to take advantage and step into a great situation if/when Brady doesn’t come back from this knee injury that keeps looking worse and worse.
November 14, 2008
2:03 pm
Scot- Won’t happen… He has to go for the “new” money from a new team. Would you want to take less cash to sit behind Brady–in the hopes that he goes down again?
He needs to be the man in another city… NE already has one.
November 14, 2008
2:06 pm
My son’s 9th grade team went 8-2 this year. Before the 1st game, he had moved into the first string, but fell out of it before the 1st game as well. Worse, he fell to third string on defense.
Yet, every single game, there was no one more excited for his teammates and no one who felt more a part of the team than him.
He has wrestling to give him the experience of an individual sport. Football is all about the team.
Vince Young could learn from my son.
November 14, 2008
2:26 pm
Gerry- That’s the difference between a kid who is taught to be on a “team” and a player who has been told how good he was his whole career… sooner or later, we all have to face adversity as athletes, parents, etc… the ones that run away and hide always struggle.
November 14, 2008
2:40 pm
Cassel is going to be the man in another city. No way he’s going to go back to sitting.. been doing that since high school. He knows he has to hit the open market with his value max’ing out right now: it’s now or never.
O’Connell is already a solid backup, and Gutierrez isn’t too bad.
Don’t see the Pats tying up all that money when they sorely need to overhaul their secondaries.
November 14, 2008
2:41 pm
Gerry, welll put man….I was hoping Young could put it straight, I still have hope in this cat…but nice, illuminating tale about your boy……
VY could certainly take a page a two from your boy
November 14, 2008
2:45 pm
Favre was in control, but really- it all came down to the coin toss.
Cassel ended the game on a high note. If he had the ball in OT, what’s to think he wouldn’t have brought them into FG range? His confidence, poise, and focus at that point would have been at an all-time high.
November 14, 2008
2:52 pm
Patspsycho- It seems to be that way with every OT game in the NFL doesn’t it? But I can’t see the league ever changing…
November 14, 2008
2:54 pm
Matt - every player in the NFL is an incredible athlete compared to us humans; How do you deal with that? I am assuming that through H.S. and College people were putting you on a pedestal. How do you stay grounded?
November 14, 2008
3:09 pm
re: Favre - personally, I’m rooting for him and the Jets, the better they do, the better the pick we get…
They need to send Rexxy on up to Motown - give him a big receiver that chase down his wild throws and competition he can beat!
November 14, 2008
3:12 pm
What is the alternative to the OT coin toss? It’s as neutral as it gets, isn’t it? Anyway the Pats nickel blew coverage on that 3rd and 15, so one can argue they did have an opportunity.
November 14, 2008
3:22 pm
Patspsycho - the reason is isn’t neutral is because the overwhelming majority of overtime periods in the NFL consist of one and only one drive. The proposal that has been offered by some is that the opposing team would get one additional drive after a score, or do like in baseball where each team gets an even number of periods.
November 14, 2008
3:25 pm
Paul- You have to never settle for anything, but I always had to claw my way through training camp to make sure I made the team… So, I wasn’t given a silver spoon when I arrived for camp–basically I wasn’t good enough to think like that.
November 14, 2008
3:25 pm
Matt re: Vince Young, how about this week, instead of your usual All Pro Vote feature, you throw together an All-Xanax team for all the head cases? Vince could QB, start Javon Walker and Chad Johnson at receiver, Shockey at TE, Pacman and DeAngelo Williams at the corners… the team in need of pharmaceutical assistance to regain a grasp of reality…
November 14, 2008
3:31 pm
Scott- I still can’t figure out Shockey… When I was a Redskin, that guy was awesome. We had to game plan to stop him.
November 14, 2008
3:52 pm
Matt - Same as trying to get ahead in anything.
Well - I’m off to the treestand….
November 14, 2008
4:27 pm
I could see Cassel in Detroit, San Fran, Houston, Minnesota, KC, or even St. Louis if they dump Bulger when the new coach comes in.
at least 15 Mil up front too.
November 14, 2008
7:12 pm
With no projected QB coming out of the 1st round of the upcoming draft, it’s a virtual lock that Pats franchise then trade Cassel. I’m licking my chops over what they’ll get for compensation.
November 14, 2008
10:53 pm
Someone should call out Favre for “pulling a Strahan record setting move” on all those sacks last night. He curled up in a little ball and flopped to the ground when Wilfork merely touched him. I was laughing my behind off. He did it another time also. Plus he got away with intentional grounding due to a phantom tipped ball.
November 14, 2008
11:14 pm
CK - actually the exact opposite is the case with Favre. I didn’t see the game last nite but based on what I’ve read, it’s a very ominous sign for any team facing the Jets down the stretch. That’s his version of protecting the ball - some QBs throw it away, he lays down and curls up. It means instead of forcing the issue, he’s letting things come to him and living to play another down. When he plays that way, he’s still the most dangerous QB in the league. It’s when he starts playing He-Man and forcing things when he gives games away. Laugh all you want - the Pats ain’t…

Loved watching the Jets game, I admire Brett Favre & the whole team. It was a good game, very entertaining.
If there is one way to “move on” past the finger pointing & questionable actions being “said” between one party or another in any event.
Actions peaks louder than words.
The Jets are #1 in their division. I notices where the Packers are…
Maybe it’s just me however… I would say Favre looked like he wanted to play football. I always felt that way too.
Maybe it’s just me however… I feel, if you are going to be a good coach or GM, you need to know how to use the talent you have & place the best players on the field to offer you the best opportunity to win every game.
If a coach makes poor calls or poor choices of players starting or doesn’t think certain players are really into playing, thay may make other choices.
If they are correct….their team should win.
If they are not a very good judge of talent or play calling….their teams most likely won’t be winning many games.
Hmmmm….let’s look & those standings again…:)
