This morning, we took a sneak peek ...
It’s Thursday morning and you all know what that means: NFL Kickoff is just a few hours away. Remember to get your last minutes questions in and your rosters set. Just a head’s up: I’ll be in a couple of meetings today, so if it takes me a little longer than normal to answer your questions, don’t worry, I’ll be sure to have them answered by this afternoon. Now, let’s get down to business with your first “Start Em vs. Sit Em” of the week.
START EM
Willie Parker RB Pittsburgh Steelers: FWP plays tonight, so make sure if he’s on your roster, you get him into the starting lineup ASAP. Pittsburgh welcomes division foe Cincinnati to Heinz Field, proud owners of the league’s 23rd ranked run defense. The Bengals are giving up an average of 24.9 points and 131.2 rushing yards per game, so fantasy owners can rest assured the matchup is in their favor. Parker has fallen off of most fantasy radars this season, due to the fact that he has missed 5 of the Steelers’ 10 games to an assortment of injuries. The upside here is that the last time these two teams met, backup RB Mewelde Moore racked up 134 total yards and 3 touchdowns. Another plus is that Pittsburgh should come out swinging and jump up early on the Bengals, allowing the offense to play keep away by running the rock and allowing FWP to pile up the stats. One warning: there is a chance the weather could turn nasty tonight in the Steel City, so be sure to keep your eye on the weather channel and NFL Network just in case the field at Heinz turns into a mess.
SIT EM
Maurice Jones Drew RB Jacksonville Jaguars: I’d imagine that this will be a difficult sit for most owners, being that MJD has been killing it lately. Over the past two games, Jones Drew has amassed 184 total yards and 5 touchdowns (against Detroit, Tennessee), all while vaulting himself into the top ten fantasy running back rankings for the first time this season. However, owners need to be warned. This weekend against Minnesota, MJD will be going up against the #2 ranked run defense in the NFL. The Vikings are only giving up 73.9 yards per game on the ground and have a very impressive resume of elite running backs that they have stuffed this year. The top RBs Minnesota has faced: Joseph Addai (20 yards, 1 TD), DeAngelo Williams (27 yards, 0 TDs), Reggie Bush (29 yards, 0 TDs) and Steve Slaton (62 yards, 0 TDs). Keep in mind that MJD has five games played this season in which he failed to rush for over 33 yards. He’s always a dynamic threat to catch the ball out of the backfield, but this weekend is going to be a rough matchup.

Thanks for the help. I am wondering if I should play Mewelde Moore. You think?
I have a HUGE fantasy question:
What is going to happen with Larry Johnson the rest of the season? Could he be suspended with more charges or convictions surfacing? I need a starting running back and the league leader, who I play this week, has LJ on his bench. He is willing to trade me for one of my receivers. There are only 2 guys I am willing to move: Marques Colston and Randy Moss with Moss being the more likely to give up.
Your thoughts? BTW Zeke says you know it all….
November 20, 2008
8:55 am
Hey Joe,

Joe:
Thanks for the roster reco’s and the encouragement. Another item for this week is that I have the Bal D as my starting D this week too… So, do I go for the FFB “karma” and sit McNabb .vs. my starting D and play K.Collins instead? It would put my Philly guys on the bench (B.West and D.Jax) which was my hunch to begin with… Plus, Michael’s Diner notes about this time of year that it’s the way a team is playing moreso than the match-up also has me thinking about sitting the Eagles and showing the love to the Bal D.
Your thoughts?
Thanks again dude!!!

RB - Forte vs. StL, Slaton vs.Cle, Portis vs. Sea, and Turner & NOrwood vs. Car
WR - Marshall vs.Oak, White vs.Car., Welker vs.Mia, Royal vs. Oak, Breaston vs. NYG
DEF - Tamp vs. Det or Tenn vs. NYJ
I’m thinking of sitting Turner b/c he had a bad outing the first time vs. Carolina. I’m thinking of starting Marshall, White, and Welker. Not sure if Royal is a better play since Marshall will get all the coverage this week against a good corner.
I also asked a question in another article regardig a trade of Portis to get Fitzgerald. I’m deep at RB, and adding Fitz to my WR corps would be amazing. And with the flex option I could play four WR instead of 3 of each if I get into RB trouble. What do you think? One day before trade deadline.
November 20, 2008
10:28 am
Guys: I’m still sitting in meetings, but I promise I’ll get to all of your questions ASAP.
KEEP FIRING AWAY!!!
November 20, 2008
10:39 am
Joe, you better hurry up before crazy man starts coming back and dispensing advise! Ocho Cinco, does he have value anymore? Would you reccomend to release him for lets say a Ahmad Bradshaw or Deion Branch? I think alot of people forget that Branch is a incredibly talented reciver……
November 20, 2008
10:44 am
Mr. Joe,
Would you start Sammy Morris, Ricky Williams, or Maurice Jones-Drew?
November 20, 2008
10:46 am
Ugh meetings, cue the wha wha whaaa. A must win this week, Joe. Favre or Thigpen?
November 20, 2008
10:48 am
Hey Joe, just a couple quick ones for ya…
Cassell vs Miami or Farve vs Tenn
TJ Hous vs Pitt or Colston vs Green Bay..
i’m leaning towards Cassell and TJ, just wanted a 2nd opinion. thanks, keep up the good work.
November 20, 2008
10:50 am
Who do you like at reciever this week between lee evans, roy williams, and kevin walter.
November 20, 2008
10:52 am
!!Ocho Cinco out tonight due to undisclosed team rule violation!!
November 20, 2008
11:00 am
Thanks for last week advise!
I do think Parker will be hot tonight… but should I sit AP or Portis (injured?) in favor of Parker?
Also: is Andre Johnson safe enough with Sage throwing the ball or should I trust Wayne (Peyton is hot, hot hot) and Carolina’s Smith (Jake is cold, cold, cold)?
November 20, 2008
11:21 am
Hi Joe -
I have a very interesting decision to make for the coming week. I have both Warner and E. Manning on my roster. Do you think it is a good idea to start Manning (against the weaker ARI def) if Jacobs don’t play as the running game may not be as effective without him?
Thanks
Pras
November 20, 2008
11:38 am
Would you start Ahmad Bradshaw over Pocket Hercules ?
November 20, 2008
12:11 pm
Joe,
Just wondering if you had any more insight on Brandon Jacobs chance of playing than yesterday. All info I found yesterday indicated he would most likely not play, but the info I’ve read over today points to him being probable. What do you think, take the chance or play it safe.
Thanks,
Jeremy
November 20, 2008
12:53 pm
Joe,
My RB’s are Turner, MJD, S-Jax, and Fargas. In a PPR, am I better off going with one RB and 4 of Marshall, Braylon, A. Bryant, Gage, K. Walter? Which RB even?
Thanks.
November 20, 2008
1:05 pm
Who would you put in as a third receiver, Justin Gage or Donnie Avery? Both seem to have about the same risk/reward and match-up this week.
November 20, 2008
1:07 pm
Joe - Royal or Colston?
November 20, 2008
2:54 pm
Clark or Witten? Warner, McNabb, or Garcia? Pick 2: Holt, Harrison, Walter, and Gage. Also have D. Jackson and Curtis but I don’t think I’ll play em.
November 20, 2008
3:04 pm
Ok boys in back in the saddle and ready to go. Sorry for the delay, but we are currently putting together our vision for the future of this site. I think you will all love what we do with the fantasy section for next year. In addition, feel free to email me with any suggestions you guys may have. I’m open to anything….now lets get down to business
November 20, 2008
3:08 pm
Anthony: I think Pitt will still try to throw the football, but if you have a better receiver option on your roster, go for it. Bad weather is never a good thing for the passing game.
Bobby Z: Shuan Hill in a heartbeat. Smith has to play the tampa defense this weekend. Never easy.
SoCoJoe: I like Royal, Winslow (if he plays, keep your eye on his status), and i’d play it safe and go with Moss due to the weather forecast tonight in Pittsburgh.
November 20, 2008
3:10 pm
Chris S: I wouldnt play Moore if you have a better option. FWP will get the bulk of the touches tonight.
I’m not a big fan of LJ for the rest of the year. I think the Chiefs are still going to work the ball to Charles on occassion. That being said, he should finish the year without anymore trouble, so he has the chance to put up the points. I wouldnt give up Moss for him with the way Cassel has been playing, but Colston is def. worth it.
Tell Zeke I said whats up and that he should stop texting me when im in meetings.
November 20, 2008
3:18 pm
Utwrenn: those are some rough options. Roy E is the only guy on that list who will see good playing time AND has a good matchup. That being said, McFadden would be my second choice if he is healthy and ready to play. Hightower against the Giants is brutal and DJax against Baltimore should be very difficult.
APOW: I’d go with Gore for two reasons. First, he has the better fantasy stats to date and two, he plays dallas, which has been known to allow some good rushing days. Turner has been great this year, but Carolina has a pretty good run defense. Also, I cant support McNabb after he made a fool of himself, stunk it up in Cincy, and has to play Baltimore.
Jason: I like Lynch (plays KC) and Slaton (CLE). They have big upside this weekend. Plus, Buffalo has a pretty good run D, so id leave LJ on the bench. For WR’s, I like Marshall, Gates and Berrian.
November 20, 2008
3:22 pm
Sean: I like Hillis against a weak Oakland defense and Gage against a Jets D that gave up a ridiculous amount of passing yards last week. Breaston has the Giants, and that is a very tough matchup.
Brian D: no doubt buddy, its my pleasure. I completely agree with you and Lombardi. The Eagles look terrible and cannot be relied upon this week. However, I do guarantee they end up pulling out some ridiculous win down the stretch when nobody expects it.
November 20, 2008
3:26 pm
Do you think it’s likely that Donald Driver will play this Sunday in light of his father being severely injured in a beating by Houston police?
November 20, 2008
3:26 pm
Joe,
Thanks for the quick response as usual.
November 20, 2008
3:31 pm
Trevor: not sure how many starting spots you have, but i like Forte and Slaton, along with your WR selections with the exception of Welker. I would start Royal instead. He ate up Oakland in Week 1.
Make the trade. You can afford to lose a back like Portis with what you still have, and adding Fitz is a HUGE upgrade at receiver.
Jon: looks like i made it back in time before that guy got back to answer everybodys questions! I dont like Ocho at all for the rest of the year. He’s been playing like crap, Palmer is hurt and he’s probably at the end of his rope in Cincy. If Jacobs were hurt worse, i’d jump all over Bradshaw, but Branch is a decent option as well
November 20, 2008
3:33 pm
my only other optiom is roy e williams. he should have decent game against sf. however i can see dallas getting a large lead and running all day. i guess ill keep watching the weather. if my opponent has romo going is it worth starting williams over holmes?
November 20, 2008
3:35 pm
David: despite the article above, based on those options, id probably still go with MJD. Williams is a wild card, and you never know how many touches he will get. In addition, Morris is still splitting touches, so MJD is your best bet.
Wes: tell me about it! tough call. I’d probably go with Favre. He’s been playing at a really high level lately. Despite how well Thigpen has been playing, Buffalo’s d isnt half bad.
Chopper: I’d go with Cassel and Colston. I think Monday night is going to be a shootout. With Ocho out of tonights game, as well as the weather conditions, Housh could be in for a long night.
November 20, 2008
3:39 pm
Sean: Even though Edwards has been miserable lately, Kansas City stinks, so i would go with Evans. After last week’s inability to get him the ball, you know the focus in practice this week will be to make sure he is more involved.
Phyto: You could consider sitting Portis, but certainly not AP. I’d start AJ over Smith. They are playing Cleveland at home, which is very much to Rosenfels’ advantage.
Pras: No way you can sit Warner right now. He is the #1 fantasy QB through 11 weeks. Get him in the lineup.
George: I have to be honest with you, i have no clue who “pocket hurcules is”
November 20, 2008
3:40 pm
WOuld you start Phillip Rivers over Thigpen? Thank you!
November 20, 2008
3:43 pm
Jeremy: Jacobs was back at practice today. All indications are that he will be in the lineup.
KD: since its a PPR league, go with MJD. Even when he is limited on the ground, he still catches passes out of the backfield.
Jason: I like Donnie Avery.
Josh: I’d start Royal over Colston. He killed the Raiders in Week 1.
Jackie Chan: I’d start Warner, Clark (against a soft SD linebacking unit) and Walter/Gage. I know that sounds crazy, but Marvin and Holt have done nothing this year
November 20, 2008
3:44 pm
Jim: yes, i think Driver will still play.
Jason: as always, its my pleasure. thanks for reading.
Anthony: not a bad idea since anything Romo throws his way will be negated by the fact that you have Roy E.
November 20, 2008
3:46 pm
Thanks for getting back to me Joe. Sorry to extend this, but which 2 of these WR’s in PPR do you like best Gage, K. Walter, or A. Bryant?
November 20, 2008
4:02 pm
Joe, Derrick Mason against Philly or Donnie Avery against Chitown?
November 20, 2008
4:13 pm
Joe do you like L.Evans or Plexico this week. Also Fasono or Daniels.
November 20, 2008
4:25 pm
Joe, I need some help again this week:
McNabb or Thiggy? (I started Thiggy last week, and it paid off)
Pick 2 WR and a flex(WR or RB):
Fargas
Hillis
Marshall
Colston
L. Moore
Gage
Avery
B. Edwards
Camarillo
November 20, 2008
4:27 pm
How much of a factor is jacobs gonna be this week cause I can start ryan grant in his place. which is the better play
November 20, 2008
4:34 pm
JOe, What is up with Reggie Bush, any idea when he’ll return to the field?
November 20, 2008
4:43 pm
Nicely done catching up, Joe! Okay, so you said that Royal is a better start than Welker b/c he tore up Oakland the first time. Would that mean you’d be okay with both Marshall and Royal in the lineup. I know you don’t usually like that approach.
If I pull off that trade of Portis for Fitz, obviously I put him in the lineup. I can play three RB’s and three WR’s, or two RB’s and four WR’s. That would put me at: Marshall, Roddy, Forte, Slaton, Royal, and Fitz. Or I would sub in Turner for one of the WR’s. Thoughts?
November 20, 2008
4:44 pm
joe–
i need two:
m.turner, r.brown, s.slaton
and then 3 wr’s:
t.owens
b.edwards
b.marshall
e.royal
d.avery
solid choices all around (i’m leaning turner and slaton, and then marshall, royal, and avery– is that nuts, benching edwards and owens, it’s been working the past few weeks?)…
would appreciate a 2nd opinion.
November 20, 2008
4:46 pm
fyi-
Brady Quinn has a broken index finger on his throwing hand, but is gonna try to play (just read this)… that scratches edwards for me…
November 20, 2008
5:04 pm
Joe, I need two out of Lee Evans, Berrian, Eddie Royal, Antonio Gates and Lance Moore. Who do you recommend? Also, Rogers or Brees Monday night given Green Bay’s strong defense against the pass?
November 20, 2008
5:46 pm
KD: id probably say Bryant since he is playing Detroit, but I like Walter alot too. Its a toss up between those guys.
Johnny: Gotta say Avery. Chicago’s passing defense is one of the worst in the league.
Scooter: i’d stick with Owen Daniels. the Texans are at home playing cleveland, so sage should be able to get him the ball. Tough call on the recievers. Either one is a good choice, but I personally like Evans at Kansas City. However, you cant go wrong.
November 20, 2008
5:56 pm
Michael C: I like Thigpen. McNabb has Baltimore this week, tough matchup. Real tough call on the RBs/WRs. I’d start Moore, Marshall and Hillis, but Avery and Colston are also good options.
Sean: you may want to play it safe and go with Grant. New Orleans is a suspect defense and GB is going to want to play keep away from Brees and the Saints passing attack.
Jeff D: no official word on Bush yet. Check back on Sunday. He’s a gametime decision as of now.
November 20, 2008
6:00 pm
Trevor: i like the lineup you have now.
Rob: I like Brown and Slaton. As well as Marshall, Royal and Avery.
Ben: tough call. I like Moore and Royal. Also, I’d stick with Brees.
November 21, 2008
12:35 am
Joe, who do I start at WR? A. Johnson, Steve Smith (CAR), M Muhammad, Antonio Bryant, Chris Chambers
Who to start at RB? Jacobs, Stewart, Tatum Bell, D Ward
DEF? Eagles or Dolphins
K? Akers or Tynes
November 21, 2008
12:54 am
I need 3 WR and 2 RB’s on last question.
November 21, 2008
12:58 am
Joe,
Need 1 RB: Faulk or Tater Bell
Need 2 WR: Chambers, Bradley, Hester or D Jax?
Need 1 K: Vinetari or Tynes
Need 1 DEF: Eagles or Texans
November 21, 2008
8:29 am
charlie: At WR, I like AJ, SS, and Bryant. chambers and muhammad have not been reliable enough to start over Bryant.
At RB: I would go with Jacobs and Stewart, as I feel they give you your best bet to score points. However, Ward will get touches as well. I like the Eagles against Baltimore.
Also, the RB question is tough because neither will get many touches. I’d probably say Faulk is your best bet, along with Chambers and Bradley, Vinatieri in San Diego and The Eagles D against Baltimore.
