Every Wednesday I will analyze two players and tell you which ones you should try to acquire (the Low) and which guys you should look to deal because they have hit their maximum value (the High). We had some positive feedback last week, so let’s keep the comments coming.
THE HIGH
Kevin Smith RB Detroit Lions: The rookie out of Central Florida has been playing some quality football over the past two weeks, carrying the ball 47 times for 208 yards and 1 touchdown, while catching 3 passes for 50 yards. If Smith owners can find an interested buyer, now is the time to unload. Detroit’s next three games come against some very solid run defenses in Tampa Bay (12th), Tennessee (10th) and Minnesota (2nd), meaning the fantasy points will be hard to come by. The tough sell on Smith is the fact that he plays for the Detroit Lions, which will make any fantasy owner cringe at just the mention of the team’s name. The key to moving Smith will be to hammer home the point that his production is on the rise. He didn’t rush for over 65 yards in any of his first 8 outings, but has crossed the 95 yard barrier in each of the last two weeks (Jacksonville, Carolina). If Smith is on your roster and he’s been riding the pine, try to move him for a WR2, which will add depth to your receiving corp. for the playoffs.
THE LOW
Vincent Jackson WR San Diego Chargers: While Jackson is the feature, this goes for any and all offensive players residing in beautiful, sunny, Southern California. If you can swing a deal for any of these guys, now is the time to make that happen. Over the final six games, San Diego plays 5 teams ranked in the bottom half of the NFL in total defense including Indianapolis (17th), Atlanta (23rd), Oakland (25th), Kansas City (32nd) and Denver (29th). At 4-6, the Chargers can’t afford to take their foot off the gas if they want to have any chance of making the playoffs, meaning everyone will be coming to play each week. As far as Jackson is concerned, he hasn’t caught a TD pass in either of his last two games and has only totaled 15 receptions in his last four outings. The upside is that he’s had over 60 yards receiving in five of his ten games this year, and caught a TD pass in two of the games in which he didn’t break the 60 yard mark. V-Jax isn’t the type of player who will carry you to a victory, but he makes for a nice role player with good upside.

hey joe - the tradd deadline passed in ny league so i wanted to ask you about sit/start for this week. i’m going with rivers over thigpen. addai and d williams. bench mjd. for wrs i’m going with royal and jennings for sure. my third wr is up in the air. who do you like better: roy williams or s. holmes? thanks for the feedback.

Anthony: i agree with all of the start decisions you’re made. in addition, roy williams plays the leagues 25th ranked pass defense, while holmes goes against the 15th. My only concern about Williams is Romo. We know he’s great, but they havent had much time to gel with each other and Romo is admittedly not 100%. Holmes may be the smarter play, but be sure to check the weather reports on thursday to make sure nothing crazy is going on.

my plan is to start holmes. i was thinking of starting williams because he plays sf and the team im going up against has romo as his qb. he also has mb3 and crayton going. i was thinking i could steal points from him but im concerned it could turn into the the mb3 show.

Joe,
What do you think about Brandon Jacobs chance of playing? I picked up Derrick Ward thinking Jacobs will not play. What do you think, Ward or Jacobs?
Also, I read your blog about V. Jackson above. Should I start him, Donnie Avery or Justin Gage?
Thanks,
Jeremy

I would love to move Kevin Smith but I’m stuck with him for the moment. I had Addai (dealt him for Edwards, looked like a decent move in my 2 QB start league until this week), Graham and Torain (both out for season). I’m left with L’Ron McClain, Julius Jones, Buckhalter and Smith. Not a good bunch heading into the final stretch of the season.
I did pick up Carnell Williams before Graham went down actually. I’m hoping he starts getting some carries very soon but I am not sure how that knee will hold up. Ah well, not looking good for me down the stretch. Too many injuries.
Good call on picking up Dustin Keller last week, Joe! Heath Miller’s been out for me and I needed someone for his spot. He helped me win this last week and I think he just won the starting job for the rest of the year since Heath’s done much of nothing all season.

Sorry, but I forgot about Anthony Gonzales being an possible option in place of V. Jackson as well as Avery and Gage.

hi joe
this is my follow up comment from yesterday. RB advice. I have AP, Graham, Mewelde Moore, Duece. Avail in my league: Peyton Ellis, Antonio Pittman, Ahman Green, Piere Thomas, JJ A, Jerome Harrison, thats about it. Trades are done in my league. Im stacked at WR with Fitzy, Breaston, Berrian, Plax, and Avery…I want to win, brudda, hook me up with some VICE….

Bill: I wouldnt drop Coles, but Chambers hasnt been doing much of anything this year. The Chargers have a favorable schedule down the stretch, but that doesnt necessarily mean chambers will finally step up. I like Keller as a TE, but not as a WR. I would say Chambers has a slightly better upside than Harrison, so I wouldnt make that move.

Jeremy: you’ll have to hold off on the Ward/Jacobs decision until as late as possible. He was quoted yesterday as saying he “might not play.” If word doesnt come out before your roster needs to be set, play it safe and go with Ward, Even if Jacobs does play, Ward will get touches. I’m a big fan of Jackson, but you may want to go with Avery. He has a great matchup against a soft Bear’s secondary and since St. Louis is always trailing, you know they will be throwing the ball.
Quad: sorry to hear about your team getting blown up like that. That sucks! anyway, im glad keller is working out for you. Every now and again im bound to get some right!
Hellshire: its getting close to the time to unload Ernie Graham. Right now, I like Hillis in Denver the most of those options. Thomas is going back to the bench when Reggie returns. Keep your eye on Harrison. He looked great on Monday night. There is a chance Cleveland starts feeding him the ball more.

Hey Joe,
I’m trying to fill my flex spot for this week. My options are McGahee, D. Rhodes, or S. Holmes. Who do you think I should go with?
Thanks

Joe,
I have no choice but to play Hightower/Arrington or Antonio Pittman in one of my RB spots this week. I could play both and move one to my W/Rb slot but I would rather take my chances with Roy Williams and Kevin Curtis. Who is the most trustworthy play between these sorry backs? Thanks

Hey Joe,
Is picking up the Denver D to play against Oakland too cute a play? My other waiver options are Miami, Arizona, or Washington.

Is Caddy Williams worth a pick up? He’s still out there in our league and I’m wondering if he’ll step in significantly with Graham off to the IR.

Hi Joe:
This week, I have to pick two WR in a PPR league out of the following four. The four are: Andre Johnson, Randy Moss, Donnie Avery and Deion Branch.
I have been going Moss and Johnson most of the year, but Avery has outpointed Moss in two of the last four weeks.
Your thoughts?

Steve G: I’d lean towards McGahee. After Addai’s performance last week, Rhodes’ touches are going to decrease and while Holmes has a good matchup against Cincinnati, I tend to prefer RB’s over WR’s with the flex position.
Joey: I’d have to say Pittman since Hightower and Arrington have to go against a very tough New York Giants defense.
Cooper: I’d pick up Washington. They play Seattle and have a the NFL’s #4 ranked total defense.
Trevor: I don’t think he will see significant time, but if you have some dead space on your roster, I would def take a flier on him.
Sam: Avery has been playing well, no doubt about it. But with Moss and Johnson on your team, I would never feel comfortable sitting them. I understand if you want to roll the dice, but I find it too difficult to sit my studs.

Joe,
Should I even consider playing Quinn this week over Rivers? Probably going to play Rivers at home with a good matchup. But, Quinn has impressed as a rookie against decent competition.

So I am going with Westbrook against Baltimore and Pittmand against Chicago with S Jax collecting dust on my bench and I have to win to make the playoffs. It’s not supposed to come to this.

Joey: Quinn has definitely looked good so far this year. Ive been impressed with his play. That being said, with the way rivers has been playing this year, I wouldnt want to put him on my bench.
You’re right, its not supposed to come down to that. Hopefully your boys pull through for you. Unfortunatley, BWest could be in for a long day.
