San Francisco 49ers defensive end Justin Smith is dealing with a partially torn left triceps and has not practiced since the injury he suffered two weeks ago in a victory at New England.
Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee broke the news today, clearing up confusion as the 49ers had been listing Smith with an elbow injury on the injury report.
Smith, who was selected to the Pro Bowl on Wednesday, is expected to require surgery in the offseason. The hope is that he will be able to return for the playoffs. The 49ers have a shot at the No. 2 seed in the NFC and a first-round bye but will need the Minnesota Vikings to upset the Green Bay Packers at the Metrodome.
Certainly Smith will not be at full strength before the surgery. Barrows points out that outside linebacker Aldon Smith, who has 19 ½ sacks, has not had one in the last two games without support from Justin Smith.
