The 49ers' depth at running back took a hit when it was revealed that Kendall Hunter tore his ACL early in training camp, the organization announced.

Hunter was expected to carry the ball more this year with Frank Gore at age 31. This means the 49ers will look to lean on young running backs Marcus Lattimore and Carlos Hyde even more than expected. LaMichael James, who the organization reportedly shopped around for a trade earlier this offseason, is still on the roster and could be in the mix, too.

According to a report from CSN Bay Area, Hunter sustained his injury after catching a pass out of the backfield. That goes to show that even the most harmless plays can result in catastrophic injury.

In 2013, Hunter totaled 358 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.
