San Francisco 49ers cornerback Tarell Brown lost a $2 million escalator in his base salary for this season.
Why? He didn't participate in a voluntary offseason conditioning program, which caused his base salary to dip to $925,000 from $2.925 million. The 49ers now are $7.436 million under the NFL salary cap limit of $123 million.
Brown indicated to reporters that he gained knowledge of the snafu via Twitter.
So, his reaction was to fire agent Brian Overstreet.
“That’s what agents get paid to do, to orchestrate the contract and let you know what you can and can’t do as far as workouts, OTAs, things of that sort,” Brown said. “That’s what he got paid to do. He didn’t do that. So, in my opinion, you have to be let go. We all are held accountable for our actions and it’s just part of the business.”
Although Brown said Overstreet inquired with team officials to try to get back some of the money lost in a three-year, $7.125 million contract, he doesn't sound hopeful. Pray for me," he said.
Brown acknowledged that it detracted from his focus a bit today. Not hard to see why. It's a lot of money.
“There’s no love lost,” Brown said. “For me, I always want to be a professional in everything that I do. And I think I’ve done that so far throughout my career. It’s an unfortunate situation. I’m going to take it in stride and get better. And learn from this.
“It definitely was hard to concentrate just because my mind was somewhere else,” Brown said. “But this is a business. And I understand that. And I have a job to do. The 49ers are paying me to do a job. I have to come out here, regardless of what’s going on off the field, personal or financial. I have to do what’s best for the team.”
