The San Francisco 49ers, with prime position at the top of the waiver process by virtue of their 0-5 record, have claimed safety C.J. Spillman off waivers from the San Diego Chargers.
Spillman, a Marshall product, should make an immediate impact for the 49ers’ special teams unit. He joined the Chargers last season as an undrafted free agent and appeared in five games. He played in the first five games for the Chargers and made six special teams tackles.
In order to create room for Spillman, the 49ers waived cornerback Tramaine Brock. The team also announced that fullback Jehuu Caulcrick has been released from the practice squad.
