The San Francisco 49ers brought in veteran kickers Nate Kaeding and Billy Cundiff for a tryout on Tuesday and the thought was David Akers is struggling.
Now, it’s revealed that Akers is struggling and ailing. The 49ers kicker, who went to the Pro Bowl last season, is battling a pelvis injury, according to Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle.
49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said the move was made so a “Plan B” was in place before Sunday’s game at St. Louis. Akers, 37, has missed eight of his last 21 field goal attempts including four of seven between 40 and 49 yards. He is 29th in the league, connecting on only 70.4 percent of his kicks, not indicative of the type of performer he has been in the past.
The good news is Branch reports Akers looked steady in connecting on multiple kicks from 50 yards in practice on Wednesday. He showed no signs of being hobbled by an injury. It won’t matter how Akers is feeling in coming weeks if he is not more accurate.
