Before the San Francisco 49ers flat out give up on Kentwan Balmer, they’re going to see if one man’s trash can indeed be another man’s treasure.

The 49ers are reportedly shopping the underperforming defensive tackle around the league, seeing if someone is interested in trading something (kicking tees?) for the AWOL former first-round draft pick. Good luck with that.

Balmer was excused for two days from training camp by coach Mike Singletary and has turned it into a vacation. Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area and Jason La Canfora of reported that Balmer is being dangled. We’re not sure who would be interested in a player that has a problem being in training camp.

Clearly, something bigger is going on here with Balmer. What? The 49ers have done a pretty nice job of keeping a lid on that. Could they find a team to deal a conditional draft pick for Balmer? Anything is possible. But the 49ers would have to convince another team – and so would Balmer – that he has actual interest in, you know, playing football. Talented defensive linemen are hard to come by. Players without an interest in the game, or with overriding distractions in their personal life that make it impossible for them to perform are of no value.

One would imagine this situation will come to a head this week. Stay tuned.
