4) Paragraph 16. Extension
“If a player becomes a member of the Armed Forces of the United States or any other country, or retires from professional football as an active player, or otherwise fails or refuses to perform his services under this contract, then this contract will be tolled between the date of Player's induction into the Armed Forces, or his retirement, or his failure or refusal to perform, and the later date of his return to professional football. During the period this contract is tolled, Player will not be entitled to any compensation or benefits. On Player's return to professional football, the term of this contract will be extended for a period of time equal to the number of seasons (to the nearest multiple of one) remaining at the time the contract was tolled.”
If there were to be a military draft the NFL has a paragraph for it.
5) Standard Club Addendum paragraph 30 of Player Contract: Additional Player Services
“For each year during the term of the contract, in addition to the base salary and other compensation stated in the contract, Player agrees to fulfill a maximum of five (5) community relations/ sponsor appearance or promotional activity requests for the club.”
A player can be paid for five appearances up to $5,000 for each and it will not count against the team’s cap. Teams can also ask players to attend appearances without payment. However, they rarely act on their right to use this clause.
The new CBA has taken a lot of the fun, creativity and challenges out of negotiating incentives as they are now for the most part fixed per position.
Many of the most recent rookie negotiations were held up not by the numbers but more by the forfeiture language of the guaranteed portion of the contract.
