Adrian Peterson had 17 carries in the season opener, 16 in Week 2 and the Minnesota Vikings running back toted the ball 25 times last week in an upset of the San Francisco 49ers.

Three games is a small sample size but it puts Peterson on pace for 309 rushes over the course of the season, which would be the third-highest total of his career.

Now, Peterson could be in line for more work this Sunday against the Detroit Lions. The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports the Vikings gave Peterson rest at the end of the win over the Niners but Toby Gerhart fumbled three times in eight carries and lost two. That means the coaching staff isn’t going to place much faith in Gerhart moving forward. Not right away anyway. Frazier indicated it could mean a greater workload for Peterson, who has made a remarkably swift recovery from ACL reconstruction.

The running back is fine with more work.

“I woke up Monday after this game, and I felt like I played some football," Peterson said. "I feel like the rust is knocked off now. That's what I needed, and I'll be ready to roll even better."
