Oakland Raiders quarterback Bruce Gradkowski tore his left pectoral muscle while bench pressing 250 pounds on Wednesday at team headquarters and will undergo surgery Friday to repair the damage, his agent, Ralph Cindrich, confirmed tonight in a telephone interview.

"Bruce will be fine by training camp," Cindrich said. "It was a clean tear and the prognosis is good. The weight isn't an unusual amount for an NFL player, even for a quarterback. It just happened."

Gradkowski is expected to make a full recovery in time to be back shortly after the start of training camp.

The injury was first reported by Pro Football Talk.

The former University of Toledo standout will be able to throw in roughly a month if all goes well with the procedure. Gradkowski's top game last season was a three-touchdown performance against the Pittsburgh Steelers to engineer an upset victory.

The Raiders signed veteran quarterback Kyle Boller, a former first-round draft pick and starter with the Baltimore Ravens who played last season with the St. Louis Rams.

The Raiders have reportedly told former top overall pick JaMarcus Russell, who has struggled markedly, that he'll have every chance to win the starting job.

Gradkowski, though, is expected to compete with Russell once he's healthy.
