Al Harris: The road to recovery Part I

In November, Green Bay Packers cornerback Al Harris suffered a devastating injury to his left knee that ended his season. A few days later, he vowed to come back within six months.

Now, the process has begun.

Harris is working out daily at the Atlantic Rehabilitation Center in Miami and will record videos for readers of the National Football Post to follow his rehab and road to recovery.

“I pretty much tore up the lateral side of my knee,” Harris says. “I’m here right now documenting this thing so you out there can know what we have to go through to get back on the field.”

It won’t be easy. Harris, who underwent surgery on his knee six weeks ago, must endure a series of tortuous stretches and training exercises by a team of rehab specialists who hope to prepare him for his 13th NFL season. He has promised not only to play next season but says he intends to play three or four more years.

Watch the video to see highlights of Harris’ workout. You’ll find out what the word “towel” means in his rehab.

And join Al over the next several weeks on his journey back to the field as he challenges extreme odds toward making a full recovery.

Keep up the hard work AL, I can't wait to see that number 31 back of the field shutting down teams top Wr. You bring that nasty that the Defense needs, you come back and this team could make a very serious run at the SB! Just want you to know that your pick against seattle in the playoffs is my favorite play of all time, throwing the hand up in the air and taking it house! Love that shit!

Age is just a number by the way, do work!

I saw Al the day after the final game of the 2005 season against Seattle. He was limping thru the Airport...that was a 4-12 season and he still gave his all 110%. A true warrior! I actually spoke to his Father and told him Al should have been chosen for the Pro Bowl that year. Thanks for sacrificing for the Packers...get well

Not a Pack fan but Al Harris is a colorful guy and fun to watch. Easy to root for.

Will be wishing him the best.

Perhaps committing himself to to broadcast his rehab will push him? Anyway lets hope it works out for him.

Al Harris is my grandson's FAVORITE player not only on the Packer team but in the entire NFL! The only thing he wanted for Christmas was an Al Harris jersey (which he got). We're hoping that Al has a great recovery and look forward to watching him play again next year and for a few more years to come. I think this video is great because it gives everyone a chance to see a side of a great player that we don't usually get to see. He's not as visible as many of the NFL players and it's nice to see more of him. Wishing him the best!

Al,
Thanks for showing us what you have to go through to play football. I think we sometimes take you all for granted and think it's all just natural ability, but it's a lot of hardwork and sacrifice too. I think the fact that you stayed in such great shape these years will help you recover.
you're a class act, good luck and keep a towel close by.

Hey AL! Keep it up man, do the work now and it will pay off next season. I have torn my ACL twice before the age of 24, and I regret not doing the work the second time. Can't wait to see you back on the field opposite of Charles Woodson. Packers are going to win the title next year. We are all rooting for you. How's your knee coming along compared to Kampman?

Reminds me of the the guy biting the bullet in the western movies.

When Porter picked off Manning in the Super Bowl, it reminded me of you jumping the route and picking off Hasselbeck in the playoffs to end the game in OT.

Al, we need you and we love you. Packers need both you and Woodson for our defense to run smoothly. We have a great team now so hurry and get back, this year it's super bowl or bust. I am a RN so I know what you go through in rehab and just so you know. Keep fighting as when you hear the Cheers when you come out onto Lambeau Field it will be worth it. Your the best.

It'd be nice if the Packers would take their CB situation seriously and draft a corner. There is no way Al makes it back from this injury. 33 and torn ligaments? Not happening.

Keep up the hard work Al! You were sorely missed after your injury and I can't help but think the season would have lasted another couple weeks had you been there. I have gone through the same rehab tearing my ACL as well and I feel your pain. I wish my therapists would've given me a towel. Keep at it, my knee is as good as new and so will yours considering I somewhat slacked at rehab and you are a tireless worker. Packer nation love ya Al and we hope for a quick and full recovery.
