Alan Grant graduated from Stanford University in 1990 with a degree in English Literature. While at Stanford he was a four-year starter for Stanford’s football team, making the All-Conference team in 1987. After being selected by the Indianapolis Colts in the fourth round of the 1990 draft, Grant played five years in the National Football League with the Indianapolis Colts, San Francisco Forty Niners, Cincinnati Bengals, and Washington Redskins. In 1998 Grant began work as writer/reporter for ESPN the Magazine. He has written dozens of feature stories on athletes like Terrell Owens and Joe Horn. In 2009, Grant wrote the cover story for ESPN the Magazine’s football preview issue about Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning. Grant has also written for the San Francisco Sentinel and done literary critiques for Oxford American Magazine. He has written a weekly column for ESPN.com and The Post Game—a component of Yahoo Sports. He was a feature writer for NFL Magazine. Grant has also done extensive work in television, having been a regular correspondent for ESPN’s First Take and having appeared on the Fox 59 Morning Show in Indianapolis. He has done extensive work in radio, having been a guest on the Tavis Smiley Show for NPR, San Francisco’s KNBR, the Gerry V Show on WRNO in New Orleans, and as of late, is a frequent co- host of the Sports Freaks, on WWNC in Asheville, North Carolina. He’s been a guest lecturer at Indiana University and the City College of New York. In 2003, he published his first book, Return to Glory (Little, Brown) the story of Tyrone Willingham’s first season at Notre Dame, as the first African-American head coach in the school’s history. He lives in Asheville with his wife, Shelly and their daughter, Ava.
