Another top recruit makes verbal commitment to the Vols

Butch Jones continues to compile one of the strongest crops of talent nationally in the Class of 2014, as the first-year Tennessee head coach received a commitment on Tuesday from Cortez McDowell, one of the better safeties in America.

The 6-1, 200-pounder from Locust Grove High School (Locust Grove, GA) chose the Vols over Auburn and Georgia. Last weekend McDowell was at Georgia’s Dawg Night prospect camp despite UGA already having two safeties committed for 2014.

McDowell essentially will fill the safety void created when longtime Vols fan and Class of 2013 star Vonn Bell picked Ohio State over Tennessee on National Signing Day in February.

A Rivals.com four-star recruit, McDowell will play both football and baseball at Tennessee.

The Vols have compiled one of the best classes in the nation, as McDowell would join a haul that includes fellow safety Todd Kelly Jr., outside linebacker Dillon Bates and inside linebacker Gavin Bryant — all players who are some of the better recruits at their respective positions.
