San Diego Chargers tight end Antonio Gates was excused from minicamp to have his foot examined by a North Carolina specialist, the team announced.
The six-time Pro Bowl tight end had an excellent season last year despite foot problems.
Traditionally, the doctor to see in North Carolina for foot problems is Dr. Robert Anderson. He has treated several NFL players, including Baltimore Ravens offensive tackle Jared Gaither and former Ravens offensive tackle Jonathan Ogden.
Heading into the final year of his contract, Gates is expected to eventually receive a long-term deal.
