Are the Eagles slow playing a Vick deal?

Vick is expendable, so what is Philly thinking? Matt Bowen

Is anyone else buying the idea that the Eagles won’t actively look to move Michael Vick until August — when training camp is underway?

What value would the QB have then? Maybe a backup role in another city, but to expect a team to come in — with injury issues at their quarterback position — and make an offer for Vick in August just isn’t sitting well with me today.

Yes, there is always the strong possibility that Philly and Andy Reid have zero intention of letting Vick go, and we have to take that into account. There’s also the idea that current franchise QB Donovan McNabb is actually up for discussion when it comes to the trading block.

A camp battle between Kevin Kolb and Vick for the starting QB job for the 2010 Eagles?

Probably a little too much speculation there, but after the reports surfaced on NFL.com last night, it is hard not to imagine that the Eagles aren’t slowly playing the rest of the league when it comes to Vick — because there is interest in the former Falcons starter. We have heard his name mentioned in Buffalo and in St. Louis, but anyone who follows the league knows that if a deal is made, it would most likely come before the draft.

I agree that NFL offseason programs can act more as babysitting services, outside of a weekend mini-camp and two weeks of OTA’s, but if you have your eye on Vick as a possible starter, he needs to be there. He needs to be in the playbook, in the meeting room and so on. All of the things we tend to talk and write about come May.

So, if the right offer were floated today, I don’t know how the Eagles could actually turn it down. And, that is why this report is so odd, so strange and so out of character for the NFL buzz.

Vick is an expendable player for the Eagles. It will just take the right offer to get some talk going for us. Trading for a quarterback in August? No chance.

I agree, Matt. The report made little sense.

What would it take to get Vick now?

"What would it take to get Vick now?"

A lack of commen sense and too high of a draft pick

Meateater, I'm guessing Philly is asking for a Twinkie but will settle for a cupcake. As a QB that's about all he's worth.

Trades get done before the draft, waiting until August doesn't make sense.
As an Eagles fan, I hope they get almost anything for him.

Let's say the Eagles use him exactly like they used him last year. Make clear from Day 1 he is #2 and that McNabb/Kolb is clearly the starter, let him pick up two short yardage plays a game that turn a punt into a fg or a fg into a td and take the 7 pt swing. How many teams have a back up qb that gives them 7 extra points any given week?

You have to remember, Vick is an investment for the Eagles. Nothing more. The strategy they are displaying makes sense if you consider the idea that they don't mind keeping him on the team for next year. They signed Vick to a very affordable contract so they have little pressure to move him until someone offers them the deal they are looking for. If they can only get a low round pick for him, then why dump him? The Eagles always carry three QBs anyway so he's not eating up a roster spot that would normally be used for another position. Besides that, I think McNabb's days are numbered in Philly. I don't think they will resign him once his contract expires. So how terrible would it be for them to have two QBs with starting potential.

Perception is not always reality. We may think now is the time to move Vick, but if nobody is willing to give up a decent draft pick fo him, then exactly why is now the right time? With so many offseason questions and instability in the league, this may be a horrible time to try to pull off a trade. Vick is probably not anyone's first choice right now. But I bet he will draw more interest after the draft when a few teams looking for a QB were not able to draft one.

Sit tight Philly, his stock is low right now but it will go up.
