The Arizona Cardinals might not have to re-boot their coaching search after the San Diego Chargers landed Mike McCoy as their head coach this morning, but it will be interesting to see what the next move is.
One source said McCoy was the No. 1 choice of Cardinals team president Michael Bidwill but he is out of play now. It’s not known what direction the Cardinals will turn now. Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden is believed to be in the mix there and Arizona has interviewed its own defensive coordinator Ray Horton for the job.
The Cardinals have also interviewed Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley for the job. It is believed the Cardinals ultimately would like to hire a coach with an offensive background and keep Horton in place running the defense.
But Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports Haley has given the Cardinals a steep price.
“I have been told that Haley told Cardinals owner Mike Bidwill what he wanted and what he needed to become their head coach. And he set the asking price very high,” Dulac wrote. “Haley apparently did this because he is happy in his role as offensive coordinator with the Steelers and doesn’t want to leave unless an offer is almost too good to pass up.”
We’ll see if the Cardinals come up with something that is too good for Haley to pass up or if they go another direction.
