Despite scoring an average of 28.8 points per game (third in NFL) with a high-octane offense that ranked second in the NFL (410.9 yds/gm), the New Orleans Saints managed to win just seven games last season. A quick look at the defensive side of the football and you have your answer as to why New Orleans will enter the 2013 campaign coming off the organization’s worst season since 2007.

In New Orleans, Asomugha would be reunited with defensive coordinator Rob Bryan.

While salary cap constraints prevented New Orleans from making any splashy moves during the early stages of the free agency period, the team still found a way to conduct a few transactions in an effort to shore up a secondary that was toasted on a regular basis last year. The Saints signed free agent cornerback Keenan Lewis to a five-year, $26 million deal ($11 million guaranteed) on Friday and have now set their sights on another high-profile cornerback.

Per Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com, free agent cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha is scheduled to meet with the Saints on Sunday.

The 31-year-old Asomugha was released by the Philadelphia Eagles last Tuesday and then began his free agency tour by meeting with the 49ers in San Francisco. While the Niners are still considered to be in play for the ten-year veteran’s services, Asomugha is apparently comfortable taking his time while looking for the best fit.

Perhaps that will be in the Big Easy, where Asomugha would be reunited with Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, who worked with the cornerback in Oakland from 2004-2008.
