Trent Baalke has been hired as the general manager of the San Francisco 49ers, according to David White of the San Francisco Chronicle.
Baalke, a veteran of the team’s personnel department, was believed to be the frontrunner all along. He had served as the team’s top personnel man since Scot McCloughan departed last spring.
Baalke was chosen over Mike Lombardi and that’s interesting because it was widely speculated that Lombardi could deliver Jim Harbaugh as the franchise’s next coach. One league insider said Harbaugh has reservations about joining the team with the front office constructed the way it currently is. Whether Baalke will make changes remains to be seen.
