Balmer taking it to limit with 49ers

If Kentwan Balmer’s goal was to see just how far Mike Singletary would bend, well, he’s arrived at that point.

We doubt that was Balmer’s goal, and now he’s in a mighty precarious position, unexcused in his absence from the San Francisco 49ers training camp. The defensive end was given two days by Singletary to sort out what was described as a personal matter. He went through Day 3 on Wednesday. The 49ers have placed Balmer on the exempt/left squad list, according to a league source.

“I talked to Kentwan as simple as I can put it. I asked him to be here. He's not here," Singletary said, according to the San Jose Mercury News. "Yes, he is under contract, and the fact that he's not here, that speaks to me. What it says, I really don't know."

Where was Balmer? Mercury News reporter Daniel Brown found him holed up in his Santa Clara residence. He indicated he needs more time and that he planned to call Singletary later on Wednesday. Will he play for the Niners?

“That’s the plan,” Balmer told Brown. “People are making a big deal about nothing. I feel like the 49ers could do a better job of saying that, but it's not my place to say."

It’s not a big deal out of nothing when Balmer turns a two-day pass into a three-day pass. Not in the NFL. Not for an unproven veteran who has yet to pan out as a first-round draft pick. Not with a coach like Singletary.

Singletary said he’s tired of talking about Balmer. Soon, he might be tired of saving a roster spot for him. You just never know and Balmer is pushing this one to the limit.
