In a “Monday Night Football” showdown next week in San Francisco, the featured matchup could be Jason Campbell vs. Colin Kaepernick.
That is because Chicago Bears starting quarterback Jay Cutler and his counterpart with the 49ers Alex Smith were both knocked out of games on Sunday with concussions, making their availability for the Nov. 19 game unclear at this point.
Campbell, who has 70 career starts, was signed to back Cutler after the Bears’ season fell apart last year when a broken hand sidelined Cutler for the final six games of the regular season. Kaepernick was the Niners’ second-round draft pick in 2011.
They were not the only quarterbacks knocked out with concussions on Sunday. The Philadelphia Eagles lost Michael Vick to a concussion in their loss to the Dallas Cowboys. All three quarterbacks will have to be cleared by independent neurological consultants and team doctors before they are cleared to return to action.
