From Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com:

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- In distinct Bill Belichick style, the Patriots coach defended receiver Randy Moss on Monday when asked about critical comments made by Panthers defenders Chris Gamble and Chris Harris that Moss didn't give an all-out effort in Sunday's game.

"My response would be that's a lot of conversation coming from a team that just lost another game," Belichick said.

A few minutes later in his press conference, Belichick added another dig.

"I have a lot of respect for Randy, I think he's one of our best players and I think if you watch other teams defend him and watch other teams play against him, they think the same way -- other than these two guys from Carolina after they lost another game. I guess they don't think that way. They haven't won a lot of games now."

Wow, just wow. Belichick would defend the player he sent home after Moss was late for a team meeting. I have a lot of respect for Randy Moss too as a football fan, but the Carolina Panthers players were just stating the truth. Randy Moss obviously didn't give his 100% effort, and thats obvious from his play Sunday. And on Belichick saying we haven't won many games this year, yeah while that may be true the Panthers are just a new headcoach away from being serious contenders. John Fox has wore out his welcome in Carolina, people say oh but John is a good coach he took us to Superbowl 38 blah blah blah... SO what, what has John Fox done for the Panthers lately ? This is not a bad football team, get another WR opposite of Steve Smith and have Moose as the third wide out with a new coach a new attitude and make a couple moves on the defense starting with the Right side backer position. Ni'al Diggs is a backup he's not a starter. And oh by the way Patriots Steve Smith is a receiver that never gives up on any play.

cp fan no one questiobned Steve smiths heart ( although he seems like a real jerk who fights his own teammates)...look foxxy shouldnt take all the heat either, no one knows what role ownership played in your teams offseason debacle with peppers...he really handcuffed the team from doing a whole lot in free agency. just be careful what you wish for in a new coach, cus you have a team that always plays for that man.....which is why you shouldnt be surprised by BB sticking up for his guys...i question the panther DB's intellect anyway, why state that Moss' non productive day was on him quitting and not your play that stopped him??

i like the move ...its time for gamble to start worrying about sindney rice, P. Harvin, and AP

Note that Belichick did not justify Moss' lack luster effort and only defended his body of work with the Patriots organization. The coach's reaction is not different than when a Parent who rags on their kid gets defensive when someone else rags. I don't think the comments mean much other than if he has any trouble with Moss he will deal with it himself, or already knows about any potential trouble.

As for the Panthers they don't need to blow their system up, but they should get rid of Delhomme and Peppers. The former is no longer good and was never elite in my opinion even when at his best. The latter seems to have similar "emotional" problems to Moss and is to damn expensive. Peppers singlehandedly handcuffed Carolina's 2008 offseason and management was foolish for signing him and not trading him. They were 13-3 or 12-4 last season and it appears that they New Orleans will stay ahead of them for the foreseeable future and they'll have to compete with Atlanta for second place.

As a pats fan, I was pretty disappointed with Moss' lack of production, but I LOVE Belichick coming out to defend him to the press. Bill's public statements are always about winning and focusing on the team. He never allows any one person to take the brunt of the blame or the credit. That's what the Pats have been about from day 1 with Bill, and its something I admire.

People like to rag on Bill because he doesn't give good interviews, but what he did for Moss exemplifies why players love to play for him. He'll call you out in meetings for sure, but he will never throw you under the bus to the media.
