The Cincinnati Bengals will bring back receiver Brandon Tate fters the two sides agreed to a new contract, the organization announced on Tuesday.
Tate was set to hit the free agent market at 4 p.m. before reaching an agreement.
Tate has been with the Bengals since 2011 and holds a 24.8 kickoff return average, which is the best in franchise history.
Tate was selected by the Patriots in the third round of the 2009 NFL draft. After two seasons with New England, he was released, which allowed the Bengals to pick him up.
A special teams returner first and foremost, he's made an impression in Cincinnati.
“We’re glad to get back one of our core special teams players,” Bengals special teams coordinator Darrin Simmons said in a statement. “Brandon’s numbers speak for themselves, and I’ve got a lot of confidence in him. I think this could be a real breakout year for him.”
