Urban Meyer is looking to the NFL ranks for a replacement for defensive coordinator George Edwards, who split after a month at Florida to become the defensive coordinator of the Buffalo Bills.

The Gators will meet with Arizona Cardinals defensive backs coach Teryl Austin for the job, probably on Wednesday, according to a league source. Austin crossed paths with Meyer when he was the secondary coach at Michigan from 1999 to 2002 and Meyer was the wide receivers coach at Notre Dame. That was the last college job Austin had. He coached the secondary for the Seattle Seahawks from 2003 to 2006 and has been with Arizona since, meaning he’s made trips to two Super Bowls.

Edwards took off last week. He had been hired to replace Charlie Strong, who departed to take over the program at Louisville. Chuck Heater is expected to be a co-defensive coordinator for the Gators. Reports have indicated that defensive line coach Dan McCarney could also be considered for the role. But right now, Austin is in the mix for the gig.

"I have absolutely no idea," Black said. "From what I hear, it's some anonymous thing."
