Biggs: Bears anxious to face Vernon Davis

So, is Vernon Davis the master of the obvious when it comes to the Chicago Bears, or an instigator who opened his mouth when he shouldn’t have?

The San Francisco 49ers tight end offered a candid assessment of the Bears’ defense on Tuesday when he said what might be on the minds of many—that the defense can be dominated at the point of attack.

“We can destroy their guys up front,” Davis told Bay Area reporters two days before the teams meet at Candlestick Park on Thursday night. “I don't see anything spectacular about their front line. We can handle (their linebackers) pretty well. I like (defensive end) Adewale Ogunluye, he's performing well, but he's the only guy I like in their line.’’

The comments couldn’t have gone over well with the other starting end, Alex Brown, but he acknowledged in a television interview that, indeed, the Bears have not been spectacular recently. Here’s the thing that needs to be considered, though, on a short week is Davis coming up with this assessment on his own or is this what the San Francisco coaches and scouts have told their players?

The Bears have plummeted on defense. Lovie Smith likes to use the Aikman Efficiency Ratings because he believes that rankings that rely in only yardage are misleading. The formula created by Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman takes into account third-down percentages, turnovers and is a more comprehensive indicator. The Bears rank 29th.

“We'll be playing Thursday,” Brown said. '(Davis) is great. He's an excellent player. He's very athletic. He's made a lot of big plays for them this year. He is a pretty good blocker, also. We'll see him on Thursday and we'll have our hands full with him.”

We’ll see if Davis’ words ring true. If the Bears perform like they did recently vs. Arizona and Cincinnati, he’ll look like a man who speaks the truth, not a pop-off artist.
