The sign ostensibly erected outside the Kansas City Chiefs locker room for a certain running back Larry Johnson has its roots in other clubhouses, according to coach Todd Haley.
It was the idea of recently promoted wide receivers coach Richie Anderson to put up a team-first sign in the wake of the controversy surrounding the team. Johnson was suspended for two weeks but docked just one week of pay after his Twitter attack of Haley and his use of a homophobic slur when referring to reporters.
So, the Chiefs now have a large sign that reads “Losers assemble in small groups and complain about the coaches and other players. Winners assemble as a team and find ways to win.’’
“Richie Anderson actually reminded me of that sign and how much it meant to him as a player,” Haley said, according to the Kansas City Star. “That sign was actually talked about in February. I wanted that one in the area the players wanted to see it the most on the way to the field.”
The sign the Chiefs put together was cleaned up from ones that were similar in Dallas and New York, where Haley and Anderson both previously worked with the Cowboys and Jets.
“It had bad words in it, actually,” Haley said. “I cleaned it up. It always had bad words in it everywhere else I’ve been. We’re in a PC environment now.”
The reports says there is a second sign in the Chiefs facility that has its roots in Dallas. It reads: “There are a lot of exit doors in pro football, one of them is, ‘Well, the coach didn’t have us prepared.’”
Johnson is eligible to return from his suspension next week. The chances of him ever taking the field as a Chief again, though, seem remote.
