O-lineman, released by Packers, could sign soon. Brad Biggs
Duke Preston won’t be out of work much longer.
The veteran interior offensive lineman was released by the Green Bay Packers on Tuesday and is considering multiple offers, with a decision expected to come soon, probably later today.
A league source said Preston has drawn interest from Cleveland, Dallas and Oakland. Preston was signed to a $2-million, two-year contract by the Packers in March, but the decision was made to cut him loose after coach Mike McCarthy settled the line on Monday.
Jason Spitz was named the starting center and Josh Sitton won the job at right guard, effectively turning veteran center Scott Wells into a backup. The plan, at least for now, is for him to remain in that role, and Green Bay opted to part ways with Preston, which has allowed him to draw interest from elsewhere with just more than two weeks to go until the start of the regular season.
Preston made 20 career starts in four seasons in Buffalo, including 11 last year.
Preston was NOT the only UFA signed by the Packers.
Anthony Smith from the Steelers joined the team.
I would love Dallas to grab Preston. He would soften up the middle.
Hey Snake, he would be a back up, and an upgrade at that, in Dallas. Dallas already has a pro bowl starter at center. No softening up there.
