Hype for Green Bay-Minnesota rematch cranks up Brad Biggs
Here we go.
Brett Favre’s ex-teammates didn’t get a blast out of the past when he declared earlier this season that “physically, and from a talent level, this is the best team I've ever been on.’’
They’re calling that illegal procedure in Green Bay, where Favre once hoisted the Lombardi Trophy in following the 1996 season. That’s what Lori Nickel of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports as Favre’s Vikings (6-1) prepare for a showdown at Lambeau Field on Sunday with the Packers. It will be Favre’s first return to Lambeau Field since the Packers lost the NFC Championship Game in 2007.
“To say that the team he's on now, after seven games, is better than the '96 team, that's just preposterous,’’ safety LeRoy Butler said. “Not only did we have the No. 1 defense in 1996, but we had No. 1 special teams.
“I bleed green and gold so much. I don't want somebody to beat my team. This is my team. I played 181 games, I was there before Brett, before Reggie White and Ron Wolf and everybody. This team means a lot to me, so when somebody calls up on the radio show: `Brett Favre is the one that turned everything around,’ it's almost a disrespectful slap in the face.’’
ESPN drew huge ratings for Round I of Favrepalooza, and Fox is expecting big numbers on Sunday. Frankly, his return to Green Bay after the Vikings won the first meeting by ransacking Green Bay’s offensive line is even more compelling.
“Seeing Brett in purple, when I first saw it I kind of threw up in my mouth,’’ ex-Packers defensive tackle Santana Dotson said. “Once he finally retires and he flips up that helmet for good, we all know the records and that Brett Favre will be known as one of the greatest Packers ever to play the game.
“But I do understand the fans and how their anger has heightened with him in a purple jersey. The fans should feel free to boo, yell and go crazy on Sunday. When that jersey comes off and he decides to retire, we'll bring him back home.”

Who says we want him back!!! He has slapped us in the face. Let him retire a viqueen.
Favre just can't remember much from those hazy days in the mid-90s when he was drinking big and popping pills before and during the games. Anyone who's watched Favre in BIG games (no, I don't mean the Sketchrodome in early October, I mean December and January) knows that he's a basket case with the game on the line. Who would lend any sort of credibility to anything his narcissistic mind convinces his voice and mouth to pronounce?
Vikings Fans, and you're all a bunch of D-BAGS, I hope you enjoy the forthcoming meltdown. It will made 1998 and Gary Anderson look like... oh, wait, you haven't won a title. Sorry for attempting an analogy of substance.
The defensive lines would be close, I hate to say. Reggie's incomparable, of course, but Allen's no slouch. Pat Williams and Gilbert Brown... myeh, pretty close. Kevin Williams and Santana Dotson... again, it's close. The linebacking corps on both teams were so-so.
The '09 Vikings don't have anyone to compare with Butler at safety. ...or Eugene Robinson, either, for that matter. It'd probably be a wash between Winfield and Craig Newsome (his career was derailed by injuries, but he was a stud in '96).
On offense, Harvin trumps Desmond Howard because he's a factor as a receiver (and just as dynamic on special teams). The Pack had superior tight ends (Chewy and Shianco were close, but we had Keith Jackson). The Vikes get a big edge on the OL and RB, but the Pack had way better receivers (Andre Rison was their 3rd guy - enough said!).
The real difference, I'd say, is that the '96 Packers had a much, MUCH better QB. '96 Favre was special. '09 Favre is just a guy. ...or at least he will be when January rolls around and the aches and pains have added up for four months. Creaky joints will lead to rainbow passes.
who cares what bert says .... let's play the game sunday ... superbowl sunday is a long long way from bert's future.
I read comment after comment saying how "Packers" fans are rooting for Favre and the Vikings this weekend and TT and MM are the devil. I've got news for those people - none of them are Packers fans, not a one - as professor7 stated so well, "those are Favre fans - big difference". Preach on professor!
A true Packers fan would boo the living daylights out of Mother Theresa if she decided to put on one of those ridiculous purple uniforms.
If the Devil himself became GM of the Packers and Mike Tice the coach, I wouldn't have to like them, but I would sure as hell hope they hit on every draft pick and every gameplan.
Okay guys, Favre wanted to retire in 2007, Packers' wouldn't let him, so they traded him in 2008, there were honest and clean discussion between Favre and the Packer's about what was BEST for the team, and the Packers' in the end settled on a deal and they traded him. The Packers' options were: trade Favre, release him or simply put him on the roster upon reinstatement and require him to report to training camp, which would stick him in 2nd or 3rd string. The Packers' didn't like the shape Favre was in and his body and talent, in their minds, was spent. This in the end was the Packers' decision guys, just because someone wants to retire then wants to come back and play for a rival team doesn't make them a bad person, he did A LOT for the Packers' organization, he gave up a lot of his life, almost 20 years, to play for them, and they decided to shaft him, they were going to put him in 2nd or 3rd sting anyways, the Packers' were keen on having a younger QB to jump start the franchise again, and those who look over this fact and look at Favre as the enemy need to understand the facts and that in the end hes a legend that helped out a team and helped win many many games for them. And now he plays for a different team, oh well, its a game, and it's life.

Brett is the biggest bitch in football. As a Packer fan I spent 16 years rooting for the guy. His feelings get hurt so, like a little kid, he goes out of his way to stick it to all of his Packer fans by playing for our biggest rival and making these a-hole comments. Until he wins the Super Bowl with the Vikings there's no way he can say they are better than the '96 Packer team.
Now everybody out there can see how self centered Brett really is. After seeing how Brett has acted, how can anybody bash Ted for cutting him loose. I'm not a huge Thompson fan but he definitely got this one right. Not only does Brett not care about his faithful Packer fans, he doesn't even care about his teammates. He shows no respect for the guys he used to play with and never socialized with or tried to help develope any of his teammates currently in the league. Why wouldn't you want to help make your team better? He doesn't even show up for training camp to help develop his receivers. He's selfish ego-maniac.
For all the "Packer fans" out there still rooting for Favre, you're not Packer fans, you're Brett Favre fans. There's a difference. I root for the Packers, not just one individual player. I hear a lot of people saying they won't cheer for the Pack until Ted and/or McCarthy is gone. Good. Real Packer fans don't need your fair weather asses anyway.
I've always like LeRoy Butler, but now I think he may be my favorite. He'e been retired for years but not only does he still root for the Packer organization, he's a fixture in the state of Wisconsin. He has a weekly Q&A column in multiple local newpapersand owns various businesses throughout the state. Now that's loyalty.
Sorry, I'm done with my rant now.
