Help could be on the way, finally, for the New York Giants.

Defensive tackle Chris Canty, who has been sidelined since the first week of the season, and linebacker Michael Boley, who has been out since Week 4, are eyeing a return to the field on Sunday against the San Diego Chargers.

If so, it won’t be a minute too soon for a defense that has been short-handed for the entire season. Cornerback Aaron Ross has been sidelined since training camp with a hamstring injury and he’s still not on board for a return, although Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger says the team is looking to a return against Atlanta in two weeks.

Canty, one of the prized free agent pickups in the offseason, has been out with a calf injury while Boley underwent arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn meniscus a little more than a month ago.

“Right now, one of the things I have going for myself is that I’m fresh,” Canty said. “I haven’t been through the grind like everybody else has, so I have to use that to my advantage.”

The Giants are 5-3 and are coming off consecutive losses to Arizona and Philadelphia, and they now trail the Eagles and Cowboys each by a half-game in the NFC East.

The Bears aren’t the only team with an injured wide receiver. The Cardinals’ Anquan Boldin has been dealing with a sprained right ankle for nearly a month now. He was also held out of practice Wednesday.
