A lost season for the Washington Redskins took a turn for the worse Monday night at FedEx Field when the impotent offense now run by Sherm Lewis lost on of the team’s most consistent performers Chris Cooley.
The veteran tight end was carted off the field during the 27-17 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles and X-rays revealed the worst, that he had broken a bone in his right ankle, an injury that will likely sideline him for the remainder of the season. Cooley figured to play a bigger role in the rebuilt offense as the Redskins were going to focus on their strengths. He was injured on the first play of the second quarter—a fumble by quarterback Jason Campbell—and he wasn’t hit on the play. Cooley planted his ankle to turn and rolled the ankle. He limped off the field but was then taken on a cart to the locker room.
“When it rains, it pours,” center Casey Rabach said. “We lost a really good football player tonight, probably one of the best on our offense.”
Cooley has started 71 consecutive games, the longest current streak on the roster. Now, the club will have to get production out of Fred Davis, the second-round draft pick from last season who has yet to do a whole lot.
