Bolstered by the addition of rookie Shonn Greene, the New York Jets are gauging trade interest in running back Thomas Jones and have placed a call to an NFC West club, a league source said.
APShonn Greene
The last time Jones was unhappy with his contract, he worked his way out of Chicago to get a new deal with the Jets. Now, Jones is seeking a new contract after leading the AFC in rushing last season with 1,312 yards and producing a career-high 13 touchdowns.
Jones, who turns 31 next week, has two years remaining on the $20-million, four-year contract he signed when the Bears essentially gave him away prior to the 2007 draft. Jones has rushed for more than 1,000 yards in consecutive seasons, and the Jets are his fourth team. He skipped a good portion of the Jets’ voluntary offseason program, but he’s meticulous in the way that he trains and conditions himself.
“I’m not discussing any contract situations. Period,” Jones said when he arrived at training camp. “I’m happy. I’m here for camp. I’m excited for the season.”
Jones is due to earn a base salary of $900,000 this season. His salary climbs to $2.8 million next year when he also has a $3 million roster bonus. He’s already earned $13 million in the front-loaded deal. He wanted out of Chicago before the 2006 season, a year after the team drafted Cedric Benson No. 4 overall, and skipped the bulk of the voluntary offseason program.
APLeon Washington
Jones got an agreement from General Manager Jerry Angelo that if he worked hard and was a good team player, he would do what he could to accommodate Jones’ wishes after the season. Jones rushes for 1,335 yards, the Bears went to the Super Bowl and, although Angelo wound up giving him away, Jones got free of the Bears with one year remaining on his deal. The Jets gave him the new contract he was seeking.
The Jets have another running back looking to be paid in Leon Washington. He’s having a strong camp and is reportedly seeking a deal that will pay him an average of $6 million per season. He’ll make $535,000 this year, but the sides are talking and New York wants to reward its own with him.
New York eyed Greene after he made it through the first two rounds on day one of the draft. The Jets traded up with Detroit, which held the first pick of round three, and nabbed the workhorse back from Iowa. He was one of six backs to go in the first three rounds, with teams filling needs through that avenue. It remains to be seen what kind of interest there could be in Jones, but based on his productivity, he could help a lot of teams.
huh? How can he have "2 years, $20 million" left on his deal, but base salaries of <$1M? Even with the roster bonus you cite, that still comes up more than $10m short, unless you meant two years of a total contract number of $20m, or 2 years with that large of a cap number...
confused.
A money hungry malcontent being shopped? Say it isn't so. Jones has been paid quite well for what he's done. I highly doubt he would refund the Jets if he played poorly. His lack of desire to honor his contract, which HE signed without being forced says enough for me. Trade him off. Fine by me. His quest for the benjamins, rather than quest to be part of a champion is why he never has been with any one team long. So far, Arizona, Tampa and Chicago have told him to buzz off. Now it looks like the Jets will follow suit. I admire his work ethic, even if it is merely for self appreciation. This is not a team player however. If he was, he would honor his contract and quit making waves. I think we'll be just fine with Greene and Washington.
Lombardi called this months ago with his "if i was X i would put a call into Y asking about this player" which he said Seattle to call about Jones.....
This is false.
Seattle ? Wow . I guess Julius can help get Thomas acclimated quickly . Help Thomas prepare to be the Seahawks starting rb before the start of the season . I don't want to step on any toes but that has time bomb written all over it .
Jones to AZ, Boldin to Jets
Not so far fetched. Boldin's new agent is Tom Condon who also manages Chad Pennington and wait for it...Thomas Jones. He is very familiar with the Jets and Boldin is still unhappy with Cards not talking with him about a contract extension over the off season. Boldin has said he will not resign with the Cards.
AZ might go for it if the Jets threw in a young WR prospect to go along with Jones. Wait a minute, David Clowney was mysteriously absent from training camp today and Rexy forgot to mention him when he was talking about the Jets receiving core. Somethings a brewin' in Gotham.
Wasn't Tom Condon just in NY to help his other client Eli Manning sign his big deal? Interesting.
Have to agree with Thomas Jones on this one - he should be holding out and would be CRAZY to play this season without a new deal. Jones has already earned $13M in his 2 yrs...and he earned every dollar. Back to back 1000+ yards and leading the AFC in rushing yards and TD's is worth $13M in today's NFL. The Jets have a rookie head coach and a rookie QB and no good receivers. Add in a very good offfensive line and an even better defence and it all adds up to a run-dominated year on offense for the Jets. This means that Jones will get run into the ground this season with 350 or so carries (kind of like Ricky Williams before he "retired"). For this, he'll earn less than $1m. Does anyone actaully think the Jets will pay him the $6m in salary and roster bonuses in 2010? For a then to be 32-yr old RB? Not in a million years. The time to strike is now. Of course, as a Dolphins fan, I'd welcome him being traded to the NFC West!!!
Let's trade Jones to the Browns for Edwards and be done with it!
"two years remaining on the $20-million, four-year contract he signed"
That's the actual quote, so yes, it's about $10 million left on the deal.
In fairness to Jones, I've never really understood why teams seem to never want to give him the keys to the car. The Bears drafted Cedric Benson and the Jets now draft Greene, but why?
In this case, I can't really sit here and say the guy is a malcontent. He was the better back in Chicago and simply wanted to be paid like one. Then he got traded and signed a new deal, but it really wasn't fair value IMO and after what he's done the last two years he wants a final contract that pays him properly. All you ever heard out of Chicago was how great a team leader he was and how much the guys there respected him, so what gives? I know the TDs weren't there two years ago, but the guy has had 1300+ total yards for five years straight and averaged less than 4.0 per carry only once in the last six seasons.
Jones for Boldin is a no-brainer for both sides. I agree with ccc that the Jets can even throw in a young receiver like Clowney to make it happen. Gives the Jets the reciever they need, and AZ the one-two punch at RB. How can this not happen?
Jones got his money upfront, so $10M is not left on his deal - he's actually due $5.9M next year (money he knows he will never see, which is why he wants a new deal. Jones is an ok RB, nothing special - not worth a nickel more then the deal he has now - one which will pay him approx $14M over its first 3 years.
Uuuh...JETS! and ccc yes the NYJ would (in a NY minute) happily trade an aging RB for a stud WR but there is no way the Cardinals would even consider it. Talk radio fodder, sorry fellas.
Rex stopped mentioning Clowney because he can't catch.
