The Detroit Lions claimed linebacker Ashlee Palmer off waivers from the Buffalo Bills.

The Lions picked up one of Buffalo’s better special teams players with the move. Palmer had minor offseason ankle surgery, a cleanup procedure, but is expected to pass the Lions’ physical, according to Nick Cotsonika of the Detroit Free Press.

The Bills are converting to a 3-4 defense under new coach Chan Gailey and they deemed Palmer not to be a good fit for their system. The Lions get an undersized linebacker at 6-1, 236 pounds, who moves well and can be productive for what has been one of the worst special teams units in the league.

“I believe it’s a good move,” Palmer told Cotsonika. “I feel good. I guess my services were no longer needed in Buffalo. I’m excited about the Detroit Lions picking me up. Hopefully, I can just come in and contribute anywhere, whether it’s playing time here, special teams here, wherever I can help. It really doesn’t matter to me. I’m not one of those guys. I just want to be on the field playing and just helping the team out wherever it’s needed.”
