Biggs: Lions lose Pettigrew to torn ACL

The future looks brighter for the Detroit Lions this season. They’ve already won two more games than they did in all of 2008, and they did so in dramatic fashion two weeks ago when they toppled the hapless Cleveland Browns on the final play of the game.

That final play was a touchdown pass from rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford to rookie tight end Brandon Pettigrew. The team announced today that Pettigrew will miss the remainder of the season and will require surgery after tearing the ACL in his left knee.

Pettigrew suffered the tear when he planted to make a block, and then he buckled to the turf. He suffered a torn ACL when he was in high school, but coach Jim Schwartz said he believed that injury was to his right knee.

He came in and earned a starting role right away and will finish with 30 receptions for 346 yards and two touchdowns. The timing of the injury is tricky. He’s looking at about eight months until the start of training camp. Hopefully, Pettigrew will heal quickly following surgery.
