Biggs: No comment from Raiders' Cable

Coach calls it ‘internal issue,’ but he could face charges. Brad Biggs

His players chanted “Cable, bomaye!’’ during practice Monday afternoon, a reference to the 1974 “Rumble in the Jungle” in Zaire between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman, but Oakland coach Tom Cable had nothing to say about his alleged assault on Raiders assistant coach Randy Hanson.

The National Football Post reported Monday that Hanson sought treatment at Queen of the Valley Hospital in Napa, Calif., near the team’s training camp facility, for a jaw injury that occurred when he was assaulted by a fellow member of the team’s coaching staff. Nancy Gay of AOL Fanhouse followed with a report that it was Cable who attacked Hanson in an Aug. 5 meeting, and multiple sources have confirmed to the NFP that it was Cable who struck Hanson. Napa police, citing a report taken at the hospital, told the NFP that a member of the Raiders coaching staff claimed he was attacked by another staff member at the summer facility.

“It's an internal issue,” Cable said three times after practice, according to reports by Bay Area media.

It will be a police issue, however, if Hanson comes forward to share additional details. Napa police Lt. Brian McGovern said that the attacker could face felony charges if Hanson suffered a broken jaw. X-rays were not completed by the time police finished interviewing Hanson at the hospital on Aug. 6.

“Basically, he said he had been assaulted by a member of the staff but refused to identify who that person was,” McGovern said. “There isn’t anything we can do if the victim is uncooperative in providing us with any additional information as far as witnesses or suspect information.”

It would be misdemeanor assault if Hanson’s jaw was not broken, and Hanson has six months to report it to police. The time frame for reporting the attack doubles to 12 months if Hanson’s jaw is broken. In addition, Cable could face discipline from the NFL for violation of the league’s personal conduct policy. Commissioner Roger Goodell has set precedent by handing down punishment for violations even if the offender doesn’t wind up with a guilty verdict in a court of law.

It’s not known why Hanson has so far not pursued the matter with police. They were called to check on Hanson after the hospital, following protocol, notified law enforcement that it was treating an assault victim. Hanson is not with the team in training camp at this point.

Sources said that Hanson was in a meeting with Cable, defensive coordinator John Marshall and other defensive assistants, and the subject being addressed was how much information Hanson was sharing with players. The discussion grew heated, and Hanson was struck. This comes barely 11 months after Hanson was suspended by then head coach Lane Kiffin for insubordination. Kiffin, of course, was replaced in October by Cable.

“I can’t (comment) due to ongoing court issues,” Kiffin wrote in an e-mail to the NFP Monday night when asked about Hanson.

Cable didn’t kill Hanson, the translation of “Cable, bomaye!” but the Raiders now have a distraction on their hands as they prepare for the season. Should Hanson choose to take up the matter with police, it will become an even greater distraction.

Well, too bad for Tom Cable, because Commissioner Goodell doesn't put up with senseless violence or criminal activity, whether from players OR coaches! Enjoy your suspension, Tom!

Oh, he's white? NVM.

If the team plays as angry as the coach is, we might field a contender this year.

NFP is usually pretty credible but if they begin taking Nancy Gay's words as a credible source then they will begin to lose some credibility also.

Unfortunately with the quick response times of the media these days bits of information come out too quickly and the loyal sheep jump all over it. Let's try waiting for the facts to come out. Already there are reports saying that Cable did not strike Hanson. It's horrible news if he did indeed strike him, but let's wait and see.

Oh yeah, don't take the chant during stretching to mean that Cable did it and the players know it. More likely they are giving their coach a hard time based on rumors floating around. If anything I seriously doubt that chant would have started if there was any truth to it or Cable was facing criminal charges.

Hanson had it coming I'm sure. People just don't punch somebody in the face for no reason... (well...most of the time) What did Hanson do to get himself punched in the face in the first place??? Looking at the statute of limitations, Hanson could very well wait until after the season to pursue the matter with police.

In any event.. GO RAIDERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Let it be known, mess with The Cable Guy and you will be DISCONNECTED!! With a fist to the face!! AFC West is ours this year! Denver ain't doin nothin! KC ain't doin nothin! Bolts suck!! We got this!!!!!

Swansoncide you are an a$$ monkey. Being white has nothign to do with it or did you not notice how Stallworth was released early for killing someone while illegally driving drunk. All Cable did was punch a wiseass in the jaw, sort of what you need, Stallworth got a few months for killing someone while drunk, usually punishable by 15 years in prison so please STFU.
