Biggs: OU's Bradford seeks out Alex Smith to talk surgery

Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford, who some speculated would have been the No. 1 pick in the draft had he come out of school, is facing big-time decisions as he plots his future now.

One of them is whether or not to undergo surgery on his injured right shoulder, and as Bradford weighs the situation, he’s turned to a former No. 1 overall pick who things haven’t exactly worked out for in order to get some insight.

Bradford and San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith (the top pick in 2005) have been playing phone tag, according to the San Francisco Chronicle’s John Crumpacker. Smith injured his throwing shoulder during the 2007 season, re-injured it in 2008 and spent that entire year on injured reserve.

“We've been trading phone calls,” Alex Smith said. “He called, twice. When you've torn ligaments in your shoulder, it takes time to heal. It's different than other positions. When you take hits like that, it impairs your ability to throw the ball.’’
