Oakland could sign Mahan, DT Alfonso Boone Brad Biggs
Sean Mahan has a chance to find work quickly on the other coast.
Released earlier this week by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Mahan is in Oakland and has taken a physical for the Raiders, a league source said. The Raiders are also hosting veteran defensive tackle Alfonso Boone, who was cut loose by the Kansas City Chiefs.
Mahan agreed to take a pay cut from the Bucs this season but the club, possibly under instructions to keep costs down, still sent him packing. It’s unusual for teams to ask for a pay trim and then cut a player because if the player says no in the first place, he’s cut then. By agreeing to a salary reduction, the player is usually then provided a spot on the roster.
Oakland may need to wait until it finalizes cuts down to 51 if it wants to add both players. Mahan has played in 88 career games and has 52 starts.
