Biggs: Redskins revise sign policy for FedEx Field

Freedom of speech is alive and well in Washington.

Or nearby Landover, Md., anyway.

The Washington Redskins released a revised policy this morning for fans bringing signs into FedEx Field, starting with today’s game against the Denver Broncos. The team had been cracking down on signs that were critical of owner Daniel Snyder, personnel boss Vinny Cerrato and just about anything else anti-Redskins as this season has spun out of control. The reason the team gave—it didn’t want signs obstructing the views of other fans, or the empty seats that were behind the sign holder.

At least in a release by the team, it seems they have eased up on restrictions:

“We have no intention of truing to control our fans’ varied ways of expressing their views on the Redskins organization and the team’s performance,’’ said David Donovan, the chief operating officer for the club, who has control over stadium operations.

“We’ve disappointed our fans so far this season, and I’m as disappointed as they are,’’ Snyder said in the release. “I understand that some fans want to express their feelings with signs and they should do so, as long as they stay within boundaries of good taste and don’t block the view of other fans.’’

So, there’s the catch. Complain all you want, just do so with a small sign, or they will bust you on the grounds that you’re an obstacle to those trying to watch the action.
