The New Orleans Saints will work to defend their Super Bowl championship without one of the key pieces from their defense over the last decade.
Veteran defensive end Charles Grant will be released on Friday, the team announced this evening. Grant was due to earn $4 million this season, and apparently that was deemed too much.
Grant, a first-round draft pick of the Saints in 2002, played in 118 regular-season games for the organization. He made 5 ½ sacks this past season before being placed on injured reserve after the regular-season finale. It was the second straight year Grant ended on IR.
The Saints also announced that offensive lineman Jamar Nesbit and linebacker Mark Simoneau have been released.

Lovie Smith arrived in NC as the clock struck 12:01. I'm pretty sure Smith will make sure he gets on the plane going to O'Hare.
