Warren Sapp has a message for Chicago Bears middle linebacker Brian Urlacher, who is wearing a ink cast these days on his injured wrist that he called an aphrodisiac, and it’s pretty straight forward.

Shut up.

That is what the retired defensive tackle, who is on Showtime’s “Inside the NFL,” said this morning when he was a guest on the Mully & Hanley Show on WSCR-670 AM in Chicago. Urlacher questioned the identity of the Bears in comments made to Mike Silver of Yahoo! Sports, and was critical of running back Matt Forte during the Bears’ embarrassing loss Sunday afternoon at Minnesota.

“Shut up,’’ Sapp snapped. “He’s not helping. Why don’t he go and help those linebackers watch tape and teach them how to call a defense and line them up. That way they aren’t all off flank all game long against Cincinnati and Cedric Benson is running for 189 yards.’’

The Bears’ defense has been terrible for most of the season. It is 29th in the Aikman Efficiency Rankings, and the team is 24th vs. the run. But the defense was bad the last two seasons with Urlacher. Coach Lovie Smith said he would prefer all comments about the team to be positive, but said guys are going to speak their minds. Apparently, Urlacher isn’t happy with what has been going on, even from a distance.

Urlacher denied telling friend and former teammate Bobby Wade before the season that Jay Cutler was a slang word for a female anatomical part that we don’t use at the National Football Post. Wade said on KFAN and Minneapolis that Urlacher had told him just that prior to training camp opening. Now, Urlacher has fired on the offense and criticized Forte during the Vikings’ game.

“Now we’re gonna run that (expletive)!” Urlacher said to Silver of a running play in the fourth quarter. Earlier, discussing a screen pass to Forte that was stuffed, Urlacher said, “You know why that doesn’t work? We don’t make anyone (expletive) miss. I guess I just don’t realize what great tacklers these (opposing defenders) are. They’re amazing.”

It will be interesting to see how Cutler and Forte react today. Sapp has one idea how Urlacher should react. Zip it.

Sapp is right on the money. Urlacher, when he is on the sidelines, is joking around, or cheerleading, instead of leading his team. This is the kind of divisive mess that got Ray Edwards and Jim Fassel fired from the Giants, and has no business here. Defense calling out the offense, and vice versa, is a way for the team to fall apart even more so than it already has. I did find it funny that Tiki Barber and Strahan came out smelling like roses after they pulled that in Nw York, but I don't think the media likes Urlacher enough to give him a pass.

If the defense had stopped anyone in the last 2 years, maybe they wouldn't have to change their identity as a team. If Urlacher had any pride, he would have called out his own performance the last two years, and the dramatic decline of the defense as a whole.

There are stars in this league, and there are superstars. Superstars lead their teams, and bring the level of play up. Stars just do their thing, and their impact on the team is minimal. We have one of those in Urlacher

Joe are you serious? Urlacher has criticized his play the last two years if you have been paying attention. He knows that he wasn't playing up to his full potential but he also knows that he hasn't been 100% healthy. It was supposed to be different this season.

You have no idea what it's like for him to be sidelined since the 1st game of the season watching as all hope dwindles away so just shut the f up!

@ Jamie - but that's the whole problem Jamie - he's on the sidelines, and therefore has no right to publicly call out teammates while he's sitting there cashing fat checks for doing nothing. Urlacher says he hates how we're not a smash mouth, run the ball, dominant defense football team anymore. I got news for ya Urlacher, WE WERE LIKE THAT BEFORE CUTLER GOT HERE.

The last two seasons, the defense has been awful WITH Urlacher in the mix and our run game was disastrous. Even with Forte we weren't THAT good of a running team. Forte's biggest impact came from short screen passes, not from straight runs.

Urlacher has criticized his own play, yes, but to call out your teammates and coaches like that on a radio show when he doesn't even have the decency to stand with his own teammates on the sidelines in Minnesota (he watched the game from a hotel room with some female company) is ridiculous.

We should've traded Urlacher instead of giving him a fat contract. Package him and Tommie Harris while the getting's good and see if we can get a premiere wide receiver for Cutler to throw to like Boldin.

I have to agree with Sapp on this one. Urlacher shouldn't be running his mouth about performance when he hasn't played a full season in three years.....and as Brian admitted, when he was on the field he didn't play nearly as well as he used to.

Jamie, between the name and the attitue I assume your a woman on the rag. That is the only assumption I can make based on your pissy post. Fact is, Joe's right. He's agreeing with Warren Sapp. You know, the NFL veteran Warren Sapp who WOULD know what it's like to be hurt on the sideline and unable to help his team.

Jaime if Urlacher is criticizing his own play and saying he has't played well the last couple of years, why was he bitching about getting a new contract, even if he didn't deserve it. Sapp is on the money. Urlacher hasn't been the best LB on the Bears the last 3 or 4 years. That honor goes to Lance Briggs. Urlacher, while still capable of playing, is a shell of what he was before. He has no room to talk. Maybe instead of grabassing with girls during the game, he should have traveled with the team and helped on the sidelines.

That's funny coming from a a hall-of-fame lip-flapper himself, Warren Sapp.... How about YOU zipping it Sapp? Calling Sapp a TOOL is an insult to tools everywhere....

While I don't disagree with what Urlacher has said about Cutler, Forte or the defense I wish he would STFU. In my opinion he's way overrated. He reminds me of Keith Brooking - get a blocker on him and he's toast. Give me Singletary, Butkus, Otis Smith any day of the week over him. My $0.02.

Allen has not been shy about spending to build a good team, they just need somebody with a better eye for talent as well as an overall strategy for building.
