The Washington Redskins took their kicking competition right to the end and opted to stick with the incumbent Shaun Suisham, a league source said. The club will release Dave Rayner.
Suisham was put to the challenge because of his struggles last season when he slumped to make just 72.2 percent of his kicks, below league standards. Rayner has arguably a stronger leg for kickoffs, but he wasn’t able to claim the job.
Rayner had only one field goal try in preseason, nailing a 26-yarder and Suisham hit a 48-yard kick Thursday at Jacksonville to finish 2-for-3 with the miss coming from 53 yards vs. New England.
Suisham made 26-of-36 field goals last season but only three of his 10 misses came in Washington losses, and he didn’t directly lead to a defeat. If he slumps again, though, look for the Redskins to act fast in at least lining up workouts for those that will be on the street. Suisham has held the job for the last 2 1/2 seasons, and he was 29-for-35 in 2007.
