The Minnesota Vikings have one of the top return threats in the league in Percy Harvin.

Now, they have one of the top kickoff threats in the league. If there is such a thing.

Kickoff specialist Rhys Lloyd announced that he became a Viking this evening, capping off a free-agent trip to Minnesota and ensuring that he won’t get on a plane and travel to New York on Tuesday to meet with the Giants, as originally planned.

Lloyd, who played in college at the University of Minnesota, returns home. Sort of. The Golden Gophers no longer play in the Metrodome, but Lloyd will be banging kickoffs into the end zone for them. It’s a smart move by the Vikings. They just made their special teams unit much better.

Lloyd would have been a restricted free agent but the Carolina Panthers did not give him a qualifying offer making him unrestricted.

“Gonna miss Charlotte and the people,” Lloyd wrote on his Twitter account. “Next chapter begins now.”
