Biggs: Westbrook out for next three games, at least

The Philadelphia Eagles, and more importantly Brian Westbrook, received terrific news on Wednesday when specialists in Pittsburgh said that the running back has an excellent chance to make a full recovery after suffering two concussions in a 20-day span.

What that means for Westbrook and his employer moving forward this season remains to be seen, but coach Andy Reid said you can rule him out for the next three games. After that, it’s up to medical personnel.

“Right now nothing for this week, we’re backing off this week just letting him rest,’’ Reid said in his press conference this afternoon. “This is on the doctor’s orders there: back off, let him rest, that’s the plan the doctor had for him. Next week he can start going to meetings and some things. We’ll see how he feels as he goes.”

Reid said the right thing earlier in the week when he made it clear that Westbrook’s longterm health was the most important thing to him and the organization. Obviously, the Eagles want Westbrook back on the field, if possible, but right now they need to let his bruised brain rest up. After that, they’ll take a look and see and probably base a lot of what they’re doing on the input of the player. He’s got to want to come back, too.

“I think the doctors want to see how he does after two weeks,’’ Reid said.

It’s expected Westbrook will continue to undergo some cognitive tests too.
