Bill Polian not expecting quick deal for Peyton Manning

No deal imminent for Colts star Aaron Wilson

Outlining the state of negotiations between the team and star quarterback Peyton Manning, Indianapolis Colts team president Bill Polian doesn't expect a fast deal.

Why not?

Two reasons: the uncertain outlook for the collective bargaining agreement and the complexity of a blockbuster contract that's expected to be the richest in NFL history.

Talks are taking place between the Colts and Manning's agent, Tom Condon. However, no deal is imminent.

And the labor situation is a factor, according to Polian.

“It’s bound to have some effect,” Polian told Boston's WEEI.com prior to a Red-Sox-Orioles baseball game. “What we don’t know is what the system is going forward. It makes it really difficult working out a deal that makes sense for everybody because you don’t know what the cap will be, what the ramifications are, how things count. All of that makes it a little difficult. We’ve been going slowly along with Tom Condon because we’re trying to formulate some things that will fit no matter what the system is. ..

“We can’t get into the nitty-gritty because we don’t mow what the rules will be. And that will clarify itself as the year goes on because there will be talks, people will understand what’s on the table and what’s not on the table. It’s not like you’re going to get a deal in October, I don’t think. If that happens it would be great. But at least you can get a feel for the way things are going.”

So, what does it all mean?

Yes, Manning is going to get a huge deal that will likely have a ripple effect on other pending quarterback deals like the New England Patriots' Tom Brady.

And, yes, it's going to take some time to get it done.

Ultimately, he'll get paid like no player ever has in NFL history.
