Bills hire Pettine, expect aggressive defense

New Buffalo Bills coach Doug Marrone now has both of his coordinators in place.

After luring Nate Hackett, his offensive coordinator at Syracuse, Marrone added former Jets defensive coordinator Mike Pettine to that same role with the Bills.

Pettine is expected to bring an aggressive style, much like he had with the Jets, in putting pressure on opposing quarterbacks.

Damien Woody, a former Jet, said Pettine will be eager to get away from Rex Ryan and show that he can put his own stamp on a defense.

“You know Mike Pettine’s going to be hungry because he wanted to get out of the shadow of Rex and prove himself,” Woody said.

“Ultimately, he wants to be a head coach. ... A lot of people assume that it’s all Rex, and Rex is the mastermind. But Pettine had a lot of input. He knows that defense just as well as Rex does,” Woody told the Buffalo News.
