Bills need to win for Gailey's sake

At 4-7, the Buffalo Bills are in danger of their third straight non-winning season under the guidance of Chan Gailey.

Chris Berman is fond of saying the that no one circles the wagons like the Buffalo Bills, but the truth is, for the past decade the Bills' wagon has been doing nothing but going in circles.

The unfortunate pattern is that the Bills have three or so mediocre seasons, a coaching change is made and the rebuilding process starts over again. Then when that doesn't produce enough wins, the same process repeats itself.

Since 1997, Dick Jauron is the only Bills coach to last more than three seasons - and he lasted three seasons and nine games before being let go. Not surprisingly the Bills have produced three winning seasons in that span - two of them in back-to-back years from Wade Phillips (1998 and 1999).

Gailey is in his third season, and Bills players are rallying to his defense, telling the Buffalo News that the coach is doing a good job despite the club's record.

“I think Coach Gailey’s got a great mind offensively,” said running back Fred Jackson. “I think he’s doing some tremendous things for us. He’s utilizing his skill players. We just have to be consistent, as those players.”

The only way to do that is for the Bills to surge in their final five games. A strong finish might placate owner Ralph Wilson and GM Buddy Nix enough to stop the vicious cycle the franchise has been going on for 15 years now.
